And so winter begins, just as it always does.

Sirens blare in the crisp, cold air, my favorite season tainted by the thoughts of losing one of the most important people in my life. The sight of him being manhandled heedlessly tattooed on my eyes, something that I wish to forget, though struggle to.

Chapter 5

"Dad! Where are you?"

"Dad...?"

And with that, winter has begun. The leaves have all turned the colors of fall, faded and forgotten about as they fall gracefully to the ground. The once warm breeze now replaced with the cold winds that send shivers down your body. Rain falls occasionally, but on certain cold days, that rain is replaced with beautiful, glistening snowflakes that fall and rest upon the earthen ground, where they cover the earth in a soft, cold quilt.

Winter was once my favorite season until something happened. Something changed. I refrain from talking about it though, for it brings sour memories that I wish to forget.

Today though, I spend it with my two closest friends, Aein and Athea. I noticed I've been neglecting them ever since Aki and I started dating. The two didn't seem to mind, though I felt bad, so today, I offered to take the two out.

"Rina, thank you so much!" Aein exclaims ecstatically as the waiter which I notice has been giving me odd looks sets our food down gently onto the table. I give a wide smile. "Of course," I say softly, picking up a fork and shoving a chunk of food into my mouth.

As we continue to eat, I really can't help but notice something. The way the two girls exchanged sultry and longing looks, the way they obviously held hands underneath the table. The way they touch each other. Even the way they spoke to each other has changed from how they were in middle school.

Once the same waiter goes and takes away our empty plates, plates once filled with food that was quickly eaten, I lean forward against the table. "Okay, be honest with me," I say abruptly, which immediately piques Aein's interest and it's obvious her attention is on me. Athea frowns when she realizes Aein's attention is no longer hers but quickly smiles as she turns to face me. "Yeah, what's up?" Athea asks.

I think Athea knows what I'll ask.

"You two are dating, aren't you?"

Aein's face goes red and Athea chokes, only confirming my suspicions. Though, I can't help but laugh. "I knew it!" I say teasingly. "Why didn't you tell your best friend?" I say with a pout as I reach other and poke Athea's cheek, causing a scowl from the latter.

"We would tell you eventually but—"

Athea claps a hand over Aein's mouth, which the latter struggles against, slumping in her chair in defeat. I smile. "Wehh, I'm hurt...You didn't tell me..." I say, wiping away fake tears. Aein pouts and says things along the lines of "Nono, I was actually gonna tell you soon!" and "Don't cry Rina..."
