E + L's age: 8

Espresso sat patiently as he watched his mother brush Latte's hair as gently as she possibly could.

"Mother, does my dress make me look very pretty?" Latte asked, giggling.

Mother smiled down at her. "Yes, honey. You're the most beautiful girl ever."

"Where are we going, again?" Espresso leaned back in his chair, picking at the itchy suit his parents made him wear.

"We're going to my sister's wedding. I already told you." All the love was drained from her voice as she talked to Espresso. "And we're running late because someone couldn't find his damn suit." She narrowed her eyes at him.

Espresso crossed his arms defensively. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

She rolled her eyes and continued to gently brush out Latte's long and silky hair. "There you go, love. God, you look so beautiful!" Mother laughed as she hugged Latte tight. She clipped a pretty bow in her hair as a final touch.

"Thank you, Mother!" Latte stood up, doing a little twirl to show off her beautiful dress, which was long and fancy. It was white with brown stripes and lace at the bottom.

Espresso stared at her dress. It was so pretty compared to his suit. He looked down at his suit. It was cheap and itchy and messy. He frowned.

He watched as Mother walked up to him. She started to brush out his messy and tangled hair, much rougher than she brushed Latte's. "Ow-! Mother, that hurts!" He winced as the brush pulled at his neglected hair.

"Don't you dare complain. Be grateful I'm even bothering to make you look good for this wedding," Mother hissed back, continuing to roughly brush his hair.

A groan of pain escaped his lips. "It hurts!" He grumbled.

He was answered with a quick smack across the cheek from the hairbrush, causing Espresso to cry out in pain but immediately shut up after. He held up his hand to where Mother hit him with the brush. It stung.

Father came into the room, looking very irritated. "Dear, the drive to the wedding is 15 minutes, and we're already 10 minutes late." He adjusted his tie. "It's very embarrassing to be late to something as formal as a wedding."

Mother sighed, finishing brushing out Espresso's hair. "Don't blame me." She gestured to Espresso. "Someone lost his suit."

Father scowled at him.

He watched Mother make her way over to Latte, kneeling down in front of her. She took out some makeup from her bag, applying lipstick on Latte's lips. Latte giggled. "I love being pretty!"

"You're just as pretty without makeup, sweetheart," Mother responded, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead.

"Espresso, we're going to a wedding," Father said as he stared down at him. "You know, the fancy place where people get married."

"I know what a wedding is, Father."

"Good. Then you should know that people at least try to look good." He moved Espresso's hair that covered his eye. "Don't wear your hair like that. You know I don't like it. It makes you look like..."

"Like a criminal. A punk criminal," Mother answered for him, adding some light blush on Latte's cheeks and the tip of her nose. Latte giggled at the brush tickling her face.

"Yes. A punk criminal. Exactly, thank you, love."

Espresso crossed his arms. He didn't look like a punk criminal just because he wore his hair over his eye! And besides, there wasn't anything wrong with being a punk criminal. Maybe he wanted to be a punk criminal. Espresso liked that idea very much, actually. After Father looked away, he let his hair fall back over his eye.
