sometimes you run out of luck.
or perhaps it's all just bad timing.
or just bad chance.

when you picked up the phone,
you weren't expecting to hear
about a hurricane that was happening
miles and miles away.
in fact, you weren't even
expecting the phone to be
ringing so early, so early that
the sun hasn't even risen.

you weren't expecting to
see the cyclone,
twirling and twisting
and tearing everything apart.

you weren't expecting to
be screaming that morning,
seeing the hurricane rip
things apart like it's nothing.

you weren't expecting to
be crying that day,
for homes were lost,
and fields destroyed.

you weren't expecting
for you to be crawling
on all fours to see if there was
anything left that you could salvage,
to see if maybe, by some miracle,
something survived the disaster.

that morning,
the morning when it was so early,
so early that the sun hasn't even risen,
you weren't expecting disaster.

but that morning,
you received just that.
