Chapter Ten

She who faints

The elevator doors closed behind us, and I suddenly felt extremely awkward. And it wasn't because of how close I stood to Detective Dumbo, or maybe it was. I don't know. Maybe it was due to the fact I had spent all evening fetching fucking files for him. Thanks to the long summer days, it doesn't get dark until just after 9 pm.

I had no idea how long I had been here. Maybe it was about 7 pm by now.

As the elevator moved downwards, I glanced around this hell hole. Dark grey carpet lined the floor with black walls and a mirror on the roof. It became more apparent that the detective honestly does like dim shades. I also found it strange that it went from the 50th floor directly to ground level; there were no other options.

What the heck.

"Might I make an inquiry?" He suddenly asked, breaking the silence between us.

Oh, joy. I should say n—"Sure, I guess."

Fucking traitor!

"Our previous encounter, do you recall it?" His eyes were on the elevator door, and he never left it while he spoke.

What type of question is that? Does he think I'm dumb or some shit?

Turning to face him, I looked directly into those dark, mysterious eyes. "Nah, yeah, why?"

"I beg your pardon?" This time, his eyes shifted in my direction. I almost died. Holy fuck, how can he be so hot! "Could you clarify what, nah, yeah, signifies?"

"Um, how long have you been in Australia? If you don't mind me asking."

"That is no concern of yours; now answer my inquiry." He said in a firm tone as if he were talking to one of his employees.

Arsehole.

Sighing, I slumped backwards against the rear wall. "As our previous encounter happened this morning, I do recall it. How could I forget being sandwiched between the floor and your fat arse?"

"My ar—"

"Why?" I cut him off.

He looked conflicted momentarily, as if he wanted to say something but decided against it. "I never received my milk. I must remove the manager's contract and hire a more capable person."

Sack Mr Richard? He's the best boss out there. Okay, so he's a tad on the rude side, but he pays well.

"You can't!" I protested. "He didn't do anything wrong. So why sack him?"

"I do not habitually repeat myself, Miss Summers."

"Believe me, I've noticed." I scoffed. "Mr Richards doesn't deserve to be sacked."

"Then I will terminate your position at Rockies." I opened my mouth, but he continued. "You see, Miss Summers, I own that business and the building."

I found myself gobsmacked. "You what?"

Ding.

Ah, saved by the bell, the sweet sound of arriving at our destination. As the doors opened, I hurried through them into an empty corridor. The Detective stepped out next to me, fixing his red or, more precisely, his maroon leather jacket's collar. I, of course, watched his every move.
