Chapter 1

(Alysia)

The pale light of the moon filters down into the ocean, penetrating the murky depths of which I call home. I place my hand over my chest as I feel something inside me throb, an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia welling within me. For what, I don’t know.

I let out a sigh, watching the bubbles that have left my mouth rise up, up, up towards the surface, disappearing at some point. My tail swings back and forth as I sit in amongst the coral, bending forward and resting my head on my hands.

A voice interrupts my thoughts, “What’s wrong Lys?”

My auburn hair floats in front of my face, bringing along the little angel fish entangled within it. “Nothing Gabe.” I think back, forcing the corners of my lips upwards in reassurance, “Just thinking, I guess.”

The little fish frowns at me in confusion, “About what?”

I shrug, “What it’s like – up there.” I point upwards and my friend’s eyes widen considerably.

“Up there?” she repeats, her voice sounding very shocked in my head, “Lys, you know you can’t–”

“Yeah, yeah.” I interrupt, rolling my eyes, “Can’t go up there therefore shouldn’t even think about it. Same old, same old.” I blow out a stream of bubbles in exasperation, “But I really don’t see what the big deal is.”

Gabrielle narrows her eyes, her mouth opening and closing but her voice only appearing in my mind. “‘The big deal’ is that it’s dangerous!” I wince at her tone, “You know that it isn’t safe for you up there.

“Well I’ll have to go in a few summer’s time.”  I snap, crossing my arms, “Why not now?” Anger wells up inside me, causing me to push off from where I’m sitting to rear up to my full height, “If it’s so dangerous for us to go then why do we have to when –”

“Alysia!” I flinch back as Gabe’s commanding voice fills my head. She wiggles her tail, freeing herself from my hair, “That is enough. She says sternly floating up above me in order to give her more authority, despite her size. “You know that’s not what I meant when I said what I did.”

“I bloomed ages before everyone else my age. My powers are at the level of all the mermaids who’ve gone to the surface.”

“It is not safe for you to go on a whim without having had any training.” Gabe cuts me off, “Your powers may be at an adequate level but you’re still not ready. Once you have turned twenty-one summers you will be allowed the same privilege as your sisters.”
