Chapter 4

(Alysia)

Without knowing how, I open my mouth and let out an anguished scream. The raw sound coming from the deepest depths within me shocks not only myself, but the humans holding me down.

The one that looks similar to Brea, with the short brown hair, seems to be the only one unaffected. She makes soothing sounds as she brushes my hair off of my forehead like my mother did when I was younger. Though she is holding down one of my arms, the gentle caress of her soft hands pacifies me slightly.

“Let me go.”  I think up at the male human on top of me, holding the Strigmatar’s spear in his hand.

His appearance, so like the statue back in my sunken ship, but so different had caught me off guard. His hair had shone in the dying sunlight as he stood on that rock, glowing like the golden blood trailing down my arm. His sturdy frame dressed in strange garments made heart jump slightly but his eyes… I hadn’t expected the intense grey eyes that had stared at me with such wonder and disbelief. I never knew a human could be so… beautiful.

I stare up into those grey eyes now, trying in vain to make him understand, “Let me go. Now.

“Hey, I think she’s trying to tell you somethin’ Noe.” The girl, so similar to the boy despite the hair colour, says as she leans over my head, commanding my gaze. “Aren’t you?”

I nod my head looking up at her. At least she understands, “Please let me go. I promise you, I won’t do anything. Just let me go.”

She looks up at the boy she called ‘No’ as she lets go of my arms, “I think you need to get off her.” She looks past him, probably at the people holding down my tail, “You too guys.”

I feel the pressure holding down my tail ease off cautiously, but the boy refuses to move. His eyes narrow in thought as he looks down at me.

Anger wells up in me as I glare back at him. Beautiful or not, his behaviour is thoroughly rude. “Get off me boy, if you know what’s good for you.”

There’s silence as we scowl at each other. Knowing fully well that he won’t heed my warning I flick my tail up behind him and hit him over the head.

“Hey!” he says in surprise, eyebrows coming together as he rubs the back of his head.

The girl pushes him off of me roughly, letting him splash into the water and I sit up slowly, holding my uninjured hand over my wound. It comes away, still bloody and I sigh before wrapping my hair around the puncture.

I close my eyes and hum a low note, ignoring the gasps as I feel my hair tingle and start to glow. After a couple of seconds I let my hair go to fall down my back again and I inspect my wound with a small sense of satisfaction as I see the small scar. The wound is hardly healed, just the outer layer.

“That was so cool!” I look up in surprise to see the girl grinning widely at me. Her dainty hands reach out to touch the pink line on my bicep and I let her. The fascination this girl displays intrigues me and I watch her curiously as she inspects my scar. She looks up at the boy, “Noe! Did you see that?” she looks at me, “Is it completely healed now?”

I shake my head, “Not yet. It may take a while since my energy is low.”

She looks up at ‘No’ and the two older humans standing worriedly behind them, “I think she’s just healed the surface of the wound for now and rest will heal over time.”
