Chapter 38

"Avery, wake up."

I opened my eyes as someone prodded me lightly on the shoulder. I picked my head up and looked slowly around the plain, white room. What happened? Where was I? I looked down at my hand that was still holding Elliott's and remembered. Elliott was in the hospital.

I yawned and looked up to the person who woke me up, rubbing my eyes from blurriness. It was Chloe, standing there with two coffees she probably got from the downstairs cafe.

"Hey Chloe," I said, taking one of the coffees she held out to me. "When did I fall asleep?"

"I don't remember," she sighed, sitting on the couch on the other side of the room. "Daniel and I went down to get something to eat for all of us, and when we came back you had fallen asleep."

"Oh," I said. I looked around the room. "Where's Daniel now?"

"I told him he could go home," Chloe said, sipping her coffee. "He said his mom would freak out if she knew he was in the hospital, whether it was because he was the one with the problem or just here for a friend."

"Why?"

"I have no idea. But you know his mom. She can be more crazy than a soccer mom at times," she sighed.

I couldn't help but chuckle at this. It was funny because it was true. Daniel's mom was always the one who made sure everything was perfect. It was like her whole life revolved around a schedule.

"Hello."

Chloe and I turned to see the same doctor from last night walking into the room with his clipboard.
"Hi," I whispered. I watched as he walked passed me and checked the monitors, Elliott's pulse, and the IV tubes attached to him. He clicked his pen and scribbled something on the clipboard. "How is he?"

"Well, everything seems to be fine. But he's still in a coma, as you can tell."

"Do you know when he'll wake up yet?" I asked, trying not to sound too desperate.

"Well, it's hard to tell in most cases. He's just lucky he wasn't one of the main people in that crash. But from how his monitors look, and judging from his current condition, I expect that he should wake up sometime in the near future. It could be a couple days, or it could be a couple hours."

I let out a defeated sigh, and Chloe rubbed my shoulder. "Okay. Thank you, doctor."

He nodded, and went to leave, but stopped short when someone shoved him out of the way. He stumbled as a short, blonde haired woman came running into the room, panting. I narrowed my eyes in loathing and stood up immediately when I realized who it was.

"What are you doing here?" I asked coldly.

Amanda glanced at me up and down, briefly scanning Chloe, then me again. She raised her eyebrows and lowered her eyelids, like she didn't care for my presence. "I could ask you the same question," she said, returning the tone of voice. "I thought you left."

"I came back," I retorted.

"Obviously." She turned to the doctor and took a step towards him. "Doctor, how is he?"

"Wait a minute," I said, cutting off the doctor. "How did you even know he was here?"

"I'm an emergency contact. I was in Minnesota when they called me," she shot back. "That's why it took me so long to get here."

She walked to the opposite side of Elliott's bed and held his hand tightly, bending down and brushing the hair out of his eyes. Anger burned inside me, spreading throughout my whole body. I walked over to her and slapped her hands away from his face. Her hateful gaze snapped up to look at mine.
