ASOIAF, DANCE OF THE DRAGONS.

❝ O, hear yee, what is that noise upon the lands,
rattling the cities below?
Why, the beating wings of dragons six,
With fire hot as flames!
And on their backs ride six maids
With blood of honey and steel!
Daughters made of dragonfire
and blades forged from victory! ❞

     —AEGON
Targaryen II had six children before the dance came, all girls. "It's bad luck," said the maesters, after the fourth girl, "The Gods shall grant you a boy soon," but two daughters followed. Three of the girls were legitimate, full-blooded Targaryens, while three were bastards from women across the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. Aegon II decided that if the Gods would grant him no boys, he'd teach his daughters everything he would a son. As well as being taught how to be ladies of the courts, in the arts of song, poetry and needlework, the six daughters were taught how to fight with swords and arrows, how to strategise and plan battle. To them, he gave six dragons, one to bond with each girl. With the blessing of his wife, who adored the girls, he legitimised his three bastards, saving them from the bastard title of Glass and bestowing upon them the name Targaryen.
