Whelp, by this time you should have a character and their appearance. If not, then stop reading right here and go read the last two chapters.

Ok, now that you're all caught up, lets talk personalities.

And how not to make them.

~That One Eleven Year Old Fangirl (my cate stwong bWave Beutigkel and smawT [BUT HEWR WEKNESSS IS STAWBEWIESS SO GO WAY HATRS!11!111!!!])

You guys wouldn't believe how much pain this sentence causes me.

First off, if you want people to take your character seriously, then maybe, MAYBE work on your grammar. Just a little bit? Please? Because if I read one more fanfic where literally the only way I can understand it is with Google translate, I will loose all faith in humanity (or the Warrior Cats fandom, at least).

Second, nobody wants another Starkit's Prophecy. Nobody. If you do, then let me highly recommend mental therapy.

Third, these character traits are SO FRIKKIN OVERUSED that even if you (somehow) have an excellent plot, you'll end up with more eye-rolls then enthusiastic readers.

~The Self-Inserter (My cat has a blonde pelt with blue eyes and freckles, glasses and braces-oh right these are cats um she likes trees).

Let's clear one thing up right now: I don't usually have a problem with self-inserts, and frankly, for what they are, they get way more hate then they deserve. In fact, my favorite OC to role play with is something of a self-insert, so there's only so much I can say without being hypocritical. What gets me is when someone's self-insert is quite obviously them, but cooler.

Confused? I'll give you an example:

Normal OC: Falconstripe is a loyal WindClan warrior who takes pleasure in protecting his territory. He is, however, overly sensitive and gets offended very easily. He has a soft spot for kits.

Very Obviously A Self Insert That Apparently Was The Cool Version of Someone OC: Rainbowglitter is kind, gentle, compassionate and loves hanging out with her friends but DON'T MAKE HER MAD OR ELSE SHE'LL MURDER YOUR FAMILY also did I mention she loves her friends?

Ok, that was a BIT extreme, but you get the point.

~The Copy and Paste-r (DON'T YOU MAKE FUN OF FLAMESTAR AND GRAYSPOT! THEY ARE TOTTALLY ORIGINAL!!)

You probably wouldn't believe how common this is. That's fine, I don't either. But, I kid you not, I once read a fanfic about two she-cats named Leafstream and Mothfeather, and their life as mates.

I'm not going to say anything.

In conclusion, I'd say a great personality for a character all boils down to it being believable. Even if your Warrior Cats story has dragons and unicorns, the personalities still should be realistic. For example, a character that hates life probably isn't going to struggle with being overly optimistic. An apprentice that is always whining won't suddenly become a perfect MC once they become a warrior. A character that is a leader still probably won't make all the right decisions.

And that's ok.

Because someone screwing up really bad is a heck of a lot more fun to read about then the forty seven, eight hundred and ninety second Mary Sue leader who never messes up and also glows in the dark.
