The "Information Dump"

The biggest mistake an author can make is the information dump. If you introduce too much backstory at once, you will overwhelm the reader immediately. To prevent this from happening, only add backstory if it advances the plot or helps us understand the setting. Also, only incorporate a tiny amount of backstory throughout each scene in the beginning of your book.
