Death didn't come. Neither did pain or suffering. An explosion rocked the room, piercing her ears and knocking her back. Tayla opened her eyes to a wall of fire between her and Darin. Ash stood in the doorway, arms extended, flames consuming them both and spitting out to make the wall.

"Get off your ass and run," Ash shouted.

Tayla stumbled to her feet, her legs quaking under her. Air was still struggling to fill her lungs. Spots speckled her vision and sent a wave rocking through her mind. Tayla pointed to her chest, unable to speak.

"Don't worry, we've got your back." Ash looked behind her and shouted, "Do your thing, Rebar Boy!"

A scrawny boy with ears too big for his head grabbed Tayla's arm, helping her out of the room and into the arms of a larger man. She squealed when he hoisted her off the ground and cradled her in his arms like a doll. The scrawny boy turned back to Ash, adjusting his thick rimmed glasses."

"My name is Ross, not Rebar Boy."

"I really don't give a shit right now that I can't remember your name." Ash backed out of the room, keeping her flames pooling into the room. Darin's electricity tried to break through, snapping against Ash's legs and spreading the skin. "Do your thing!"

"You are so obnoxiously bossy."

Ross spread his legs, widening his stance until Tayla thought he'd fall over. Both arms extended from his side, rising up to point above him. The ground shook, breaking what was left of glass in the halls. Light bulbs exploded, showering them in glass and sparks. Once clean marble floors now stained with blood and burn marks cracked and spread apart. Thick rebar protruded from below, rising up in a jagged crisscrossing shell. Metal rose to the ceiling breaking through checkered tiling. As soon as rebar blocked the door and broken window into the particle transporter room, air exploded into Tayla's lung. She gasped for breath, pressing both hands to her chest.

"Hard to be an asshole with electricity when you're surrounded by a giant lightning rod wall," Ash said. She touched a hand to her ear. "Mylar have you gotten access back?"

Tayla touched her own ear, realizing she'd lost her earpiece at some point during her struggles.

"Okay good. As soon as dick face uses it, destroy it. We don't want him bringing reinforcements." Ash looked at Tayla. "Darin is using the transporter. Likely intending to bring more help. Mylar has access to the building again, but let's get the hell out of here."

"Max . . ." Tayla wiggled out of her holders arms and stumbled forward. "He's down the hall."

"We got him Tayla," Ash said, curling an arm around her. "But we're going to be dead if we don't get out of here. Mylar is the sewers still an option?"

"No. Not the sewers. We're not crawling away unseen. Give me your earpiece," Tayla said. She pressed it into her ear after Ash dropped it into her palm. "Mylar can you hear me?"
