A/N: It's August, Little Bees! I nearly forgot to post this over the weekend 😅 I hope you enjoy my speculative-sci fi romance mash-up!
A young woman yawned, wrapping herself in her clean white lab coat as she trudged down the basement steps to find her husband bent over a lab table and typing furiously into his laptop while he examined the specimen in the petri dish under the microscope.
"Honey what are you doing? It's late. Give it a rest," she mumbled, sweeping up her long brunette hair in a knot atop her head as she crossed the dimly lit space to the table.
He looked up at her, brushing his tuft of brown curly hair out of his face with his bright blue eyes gleaming. "I've found something. Look at this," he said, taking her hand and pulling her to the table. She pressed her face to the microscope to examine the spliced plant he was studying. It was a rare plant they found in the rainforest in South America and he'd been testing it to see if he could find the origins of it. The plant didn't look any different than it's oddly violet leaves and bright orange stem, but when she looked at the laptop, her eyes grew wide at the double helix formulating on the screen. "Oh my God," she breathed. "Do you know what this means?!"
He laughed, kissing her cheek. "Yes, we have just about proven the Goddess exists. Now all we have to do is find her."
"We need to present this to the science board and get a team!" she exclaimed, shaking his shoulders with glee.
"No." He shook his head, placing his hands over hers. "We do this ourselves. I don't want anyone else involved besides you, me and our team. I don't want the government involved."
She frowned. "Yeah but our grant to do this came from the government. If they find out we're doing this research without consulting the board, we'll never get another grant like this or worse, we'll lose our professional standing."
"Once we find the Goddess they won't care that we didn't get permission. We're going to be so fucking rich, darling. We'll go down in history as the scientists who proved Mother Nature and created an endless amount of food for the world." He smiled and kissed her.
"Oh I love you." She grinned.
"I love you too. Tomorrow we organize our team and book our flights to Brazil."
"Brazil?" She raised an eyebrow. "You think that's where she is? Just because the plant was there doesn't mean she is."
"This plant has the most traces of humanoid DNA than any other plant we've found. She has to be in the rainforest. I know she's there. We just have to follow the plants."
"If you say so darling," she said, kissing him softly. They'd been working for years on this research trying to prove or disprove the existence of Mother Nature. They figured if the Goddess was real they could prove that she gave life to the earth and if they captured her they could use her to slow the rapid rate of climate change, produce more natural food and revive wildlife to sustain human life. They could finally save the planet like they'd always wanted and it was a bonus they'd get rich doing it.
