love, where we stand
is not a playground
with laughter ringing
through the air
this place—the one
we found ourselves in—
is not of smiles
nor clarity in flair

love, where we stand
is not what most people
believe love should be
this place—this battlefield
we started ourselves—
is not a place of freedom
but that of insanity

love, where we stand
is not nice, pretty, nor easy
this grave—the one
we constantly find
ourselves to be digging—
is dark, grim, messy

so i bear this promise
as i reflect on the true meaning
of what i am willing to give to you
—a promise that i will brave
ruins, battlefields
even the darkest parts of you
that you leave behind

love, it may not be the best
nor the easiest
but i promise you that
i will love you
—not on the place
we wish to be
nor on the dream
we cannot grasp with our hands—
darling, i will love you
right where we stand
