"What's wrong with her?" Rem asked, raising an eyebrow at the terrified R3 now in his possession.

"She's having a panic attack! Now let her go. Please," I added. "Please."

"You must be pretty attached to your little R3 pet," he mocks.

"She was being researched by my team before-"

"Don't even try it," he reached inside the mask and picked Kriss up between his thumb and forefinger. She yelped and struggled. I stepped forward.

"My reasons for having her are none of your business," I said coldly, keeping my eyes on the hand holding Kriss.

"None of my business?" He laughed darkly. "You're going to tell me that the only Syran from the bombed facilities I've found is the one who makes friends with R3s? And I'm just supposed to believe that you know nothing about potential Syran traitors sabotaging our colonization efforts?"

"Yes!" I insist. "Why would I side with the R3s? I've lived here since the early stages of colonization! I've killed them for-"

"Yeah, for science. You said that already."

"I'm not a traitor."

"Then prove it," he says. He stretches the hand holding Kriss out to me. "Kill her." My stomach clenches. Rem must've seen the blood drain from my face. "You kill them for science, right? Here's my experiment. I predict that a Tsosyran traitor won't be able to kill a tiny R3 enemy given the chance." He gives Kriss a squeeze. "If I'm correct, then I shoot you in the face right now. If I'm wrong..." he shrugs. "We'll see what happens when we make it to the base."

"No! Please stop, let me go. Please no, please," She begs. I know she can't understand a word we're saying, but she must sense the tension and lurking danger. I take her from Rem. He nods at me.

"Come on, brainiac. Drop her, squish her, you can even eat her I don't care. Kill her and I just might believe your story."

My shoulders slump. I know I've already lost. I've tried to let Kriss die. Over and over again I've saved her life. I couldn't kill her then and I can't kill her now.

"I won't do it," I say quietly. Her hands are gripping at the fist that holds her, whining whenever she looks down. Rem cursed, reaching for his weapon again. "It's not because I'm a traitor." I added quickly. He raised a brow at me. "I don't know what happened, but during one of the tests she was about to die. We always let them die. I always let them die. But for some reason I couldn't stand the thought of her dying like that, so I saved her."

"So you wanted a pet, good for you," he said, unimpressed.

"It wasn't that," I shook my head. "We put her through another test, she almost died again. I saved her again. Then I ran out of excuses to keep her alive. She was scheduled to be dissected and it was out of my hands. That's when the explosions happened."

"And where were you exactly when they hit?" He says.

What little hope I had was faltering, Rem wasn't believing a word I was saying.

"I was on my way to my superior to ask about whatever was happening to me." He tilted his head.

"Happening to you?"
