The earthshaking footsteps shuttered through my legs, making me weak in the knees. I held the pistol in an iron grip. I clutched it like a lifeline as I stayed crouched behind the building a few blocks away from our previous hiding spot. Asher was standing beside me. His gun was still in the waistband of his jeans. He was tense, but I doubt his heart was slamming against his ribs or that his stomach was ready to empty its contents all over the dirty cement like me.

I glanced as Zoe across the street from us. She held her gun with both hands, kneeling behind the brick wall. Paxton and Owen stood behind her, waiting.

Bright light flashed down the street. There was a pause, the light flashed again. I swallowed a whimper.

A figure squatted in front of me on silent feet. Asher placed a hand on my shoulder. Looking into my eyes, he breathed deeply. He nodded at me and did it again. I mimicked the action, my breath stuttering out pitifully.

The footsteps continued.

He gently grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. Before I could process what he was doing, I was pressed between the wall and his body. My heart hammered against my ribs. The next quake was the strongest yet. My head swung toward the street.

An enormous boot made impact with the ground. The displaced air tossed my hair. Our bodies were merely as tall as his ankles which led into thick calves clothed in blood red pants. I didn't bother looking any higher. This sight was enough to keep me frozen in place. The gun in my hands felt ridiculous. I might as well be clutching a stuffed animal.

Another footstep sounded slightly further away and this boot lifted to follow the other. It was out of sight in seconds.

Asher caught me when my legs turned to jelly. Hudson crossed to the sidewalk parallel to us and poked his head around the corner. The light flashed through the street again and he slammed his back against the wall. I could see his breath still.

This time, the light didn't disappear. I could see it illuminating the building down the block. It homed in on it, blinking and turning from white to blue. My mouth fell open as the inside of the building we shown in detail, as if the walls had turned that same transparent blue. On the bottom floor was a small orange glowing blob.

It was moving.

A knee crashed into the ground before it, the vibration shuddering through my legs. A hand flattened beside it, bearing the weight of the monster's arm. Fabric rustled as his head came into view. Locks of hair as black as oil hung from his head as he bent over. The light must have been attached to his uniform as it moved with his body, keeping the building illuminated.

The orange blob didn't flee. Instead, it crept forward towards the entrance of the building, towards the giant. I hoped against hope that whoever it was would gain the sense to flee.

The giant bent over further. His long arm reached forward. The entrance on the bottom floor was made entirely of glass. The giant didn't mind that. His blue hand rammed through the entrance, shattering the glass and crashing through the building and reaching for whoever was moving inside it. The sound of breaking glass and crumbling cement rang through the dark city.
