Cole reaches into his bag and grabs his calculus book, pen and calculator. But as he opens the page to the first question, he sees a question completely different, something he would have learned in grade 10 math back in high school.
"Confused at how to begin?" Mr. Kenny asks pulling Cole from his train of thought
"Ughhhh yeah, I don't understand how to do linear inequalities" Cole says perplexed
"No worries lets try some of these questions together" Mr. Kenny says
They both do a page of equations together.
"I think I'm getting the hang of it" Cole says flipping the page
But when he looks at the next page he looks confused again. Grade 8 Algebra? Ugh but he didnt know how to do that.
"Ugh I should know how to do this" Cole says getting annoyed
"Hey hey its ok, we can work on it together" Mr. Kenny says
"But I need to be ready for high school" Cole argues
"I love you work ethic but High School is soooo far away, why don't we focus on right now, sound fair" Mr. Kenny says with a warm smile
Cole suddenly calms down and scooches closer to the desk.
"Alright" he says as they continue with the questions
Mr. Kenny and Cole continue with more questions up until the reach... long division. Cole hated long division.
"Its alright take your time" Mr. Kenny says as Cole looks up to see his warm smile yet again
With the support he continues. But the next question stumps Cole yet again.
"What is nine minus three?"
"I don't know" Cole says sadly
"Here pretend that you are nine years old, and I take three years away. How old would you be?"
"Six!"
"That's right buddy" Mr. Kenny says ruffling Coles hair and lifting him onto his lap
