Kael

The morning air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and the distant whispers of the forest as I stood in the shadowed garden beside my palace, my mind focused on the delicate dance of dark magic that I sought to master. With a flick of my wrist, I conjured forth tendrils of shadow, weaving them together in intricate patterns as I attempted to unlock the secrets of a new spell.

But despite my efforts, the magic refused to yield to my command, slipping through my fingers like smoke on the wind.

Frustration bubbled within me, a familiar sensation that I had grown accustomed to over the years. Dark magic was unpredictable at the best of times, but today it seemed particularly stubborn in its defiance.

"Useless," I muttered under my breath, my tone dripping with sarcasm as I dismissed the failed spell with a wave of my hand. "As expected."

Before I could make another attempt, the sound of approaching footsteps drew my attention, and I turned to see one of my guards approaching, his expression tense with urgency.

"Speak," I commanded, regarding him with a raised eyebrow.

The guard hesitated for a moment before delivering his report, his words laden with concern.

"My prince, soldiers at the borders of the forest have reported seeing Prince Adrian of the Summer Court being surrounded by the people of the Summer Court, beyond the river," he said, his voice tinged with unease.

A surge of protectiveness welled up within me at the news, overshadowing my earlier frustrations with dark magic. Adrian may be a thorn in my side at times, but he was still my brother, and I would not let any harm come to him on my watch.

My muscles tensed, ready to spring into motion, but before I could move, the heavy oak door leading into the garden slammed open with a resounding crash.

Startled, I turned to see my father, the king, striding towards me with fury etched into every line of his face. His eyes blazed with disappointment and anger, and I braced myself for the onslaught of his words.

"Kael!" he thundered, his voice like thunder crashing through the air. "What have you done?"

I swallowed hard, the weight of his accusation settling heavily on my shoulders. It was a familiar refrain, one that echoed the years of disappointment and disapproval that had marked our relationship.

"You were supposed to be responsible for your brother," he seethed, his voice dripping with scorn. "And yet here he is, wandering into enemy territory without a care in the world. You have failed in your duty as his elder brother, as a prince of the Shadowlands."

His words struck me like a physical blow, stirring up a storm of emotions that I had long tried to bury deep within me. Memories of my father's harsh words and relentless expectations flooded back, threatening to overwhelm me with their intensity.

"You've let your brother wander into enemy territory. I will have to personally go to their lowly palace to fetch him!"

I looked up, confusion clouding my features. "The palace?"

The guard, sensing the tension, stepped forward. "Your Majesty, the prince was taken to the palace by the royal guards."

The king's face darkened even further at the news, his rage boiling over as he lashed out.

"Everybody in this household has a knack for running away," he spat, his voice dripping with contempt. "First your mother, and now your brother. It seems I am surrounded by cowards and traitors."

A knot formed in my throat at the mention of my mother, memories of her disappearance flooding back with painful clarity. I had been just a young boy when she vanished into the night without a word, leaving behind nothing but questions and heartache in her wake.

Helplessness washed over me like a tidal wave, the memory of that night still fresh in my mind after all these years.

The sense of helplessness that had washed over me in that moment came rushing back with a vengeance, threatening to overwhelm me with its intensity.

I clenched my fists at my sides, my nails digging into my palms as I fought to keep my emotions in check. My father's words were like salt in an open wound, reopening old scars that had never fully healed.

"I will go to the palace and bring him back," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil raging within me. "I will not let him come to harm."

But as I stood there, grappling with the weight of my father's words and the memories they stirred within me, a flicker of determination sparked to life in the depths of my soul. I may not be able to change the past, but I could still fight for my family's future.

With a determined stride, I turned and left the garden, my mind already racing with plans to find my brother and ensure his safe return home. But as I made my way towards the palace, the weight of my father's disappointment hung heavy on my shoulders, a constant reminder of the expectations that I could never seem to meet.

Stepping out into the courtyard, I found myself surrounded by a contingent of soldiers, their expressions grim and determined.

"Let's go," I commanded, my voice steady despite the turmoil churning within me.

Without a word, the soldiers fell into formation behind me, their armor glinting in the sunlight as we set off towards the Summer Court. The journey was long and arduous, but I paid little heed to the passing landscape, my mind consumed by thoughts of my brother and the dangers that awaited him in the enemy's stronghold.

As we drew nearer to the Summer Court, a sense of unease settled over me like a heavy cloak, the air thick with the tension of impending confrontation. But I pushed aside my fears, focusing instead on the task at hand – finding Adrian and bringing him back to the safety of the Shadowlands.
