You sit on the couch in your dimly lit living room, the soft sound of the rain tapping against the windows almost drowned out by the turmoil in your chest. It's been a long day, but it's nothing compared to the ache that's been growing in your heart for the past few weeks. You've always known Niou Masaharu to be a trickster, someone who couldn't take life too seriously, but this? This is different. You feel as though you've been drifting further away from him, and it hurts more than you care to admit.
The worst part? He doesn't even seem to notice. Every time you try to talk to him, it's like he brushes it off, playing it all off as a joke. But it's not funny anymore. You want him to care, to show that he's invested in this relationship, but it's like pulling teeth. Maybe you're asking for too much? But no—this is what relationships are supposed to be, right? Mutual effort, mutual care. So why does it feel like you're the only one putting anything in?
The tears start to fall before you even realize it. You cover your face with your hands, desperate to hold it together, but you can't. The frustration, the sadness, the feeling of being invisible to him—all of it crashes over you in waves.
"(Y/N)?"
You jump slightly, wiping your tears away hastily as you look up to see your brother, Sanada Genichirou, standing in the doorway. His usual stoic expression softens when he sees your tear-streaked face.
"Genichirou..." You say his name shakily, and before you can stop yourself, the tears come harder, falling freely now.
Sanada steps into the room, closing the door behind him, and sits beside you on the couch. He places a hand on your back in an attempt to comfort you, but it only makes you feel more vulnerable.
"What happened? Why are you crying?" he asks gently, concern flooding his voice.
You shake your head, wiping at your eyes. "It's Niou. He... He just doesn't care. He's never serious. Whenever I try to talk to him, it's like he's not even there. I feel like a stranger to him, Genichirou."
Sanada's frown deepens, but he remains quiet, listening to your words. You can't hold it in any longer.
"I thought he was putting in effort, I really did. But now, it's like I'm the only one trying. I feel so stupid for even thinking he could change. He's just... playing games, like always."
You cry harder now, your shoulders shaking, and you feel your brother's arm wrap around you in an attempt to comfort you.
"We all know Niou," Sanada begins softly, his voice calm, though there's a hint of understanding. "He's not serious about much, except for tennis. But that doesn't mean he doesn't care about you. I've seen it in his eyes. He cares more than you think."
You look up at him, the words not comforting you as much as he hoped. "Then why can't he show it? Why can't he just... act like he cares? Why does he have to be such an asshole?"
Sanada's eyes soften as he pulls you closer, resting his chin on the top of your head. "He's just confused, (Y/N). He's still trying to figure things out in his own way. Trust me, he loves you. You'll see it when you least expect it."
You shake your head, frustrated. "It's not enough anymore, Genichirou. I need more than this. I can't keep pretending that I'm okay with being ignored."
Sanada doesn't say anything more, just holds you as you cry into his chest. He doesn't have the answers, but you find some comfort in his presence, at least for now.
And then, just as you're starting to feel like you might never be okay, something shifts. The air feels lighter, almost as though a presence is lingering in the room, just beyond your reach. You pull away from your brother, wiping your face with the back of your hand. But then—something feels off.
"(Y/N)..."
You turn, confused, and your heart skips a beat when you see the person standing in the doorway, a mischievous grin on his face. It's Niou. Your Niou.
"Niou?!" you exclaim, standing quickly. But how—how long had he been there? And why was he... dressed like your brother?
He shrugs, a sheepish look crossing his face. "Yeah, that was me. I saw you crying and thought I should check in... but I knew if I came in as myself, you'd just get mad." He lets out a sigh, stepping closer to you, his voice suddenly serious. "I'm such an idiot, (Y/N). I don't know what's wrong with me. I thought I was just having fun, but... I see now that I was hurting you, and that's the last thing I wanted."
You stare at him, your heart beating a little faster. "Wait, so you were pretending to be Genichirou this whole time? You knew what I was feeling?"
Niou rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah... I didn't want to mess things up more, but now I see I've done worse. I'm sorry, (Y/N). Will you forgive me?"
You don't say anything right away. Instead, you step forward, your arms wrapping around him as you press your lips to his in a passionate kiss.
His arms encircle you, pulling you closer, and you can feel the sincerity in his touch, something you'd been craving for so long. When you finally pull away, breathless, you smile softly.
"I forgive you, Niou."
He smiles back, his usual playful grin returned, though it now holds something deeper. "I'm not going to take you for granted again. I promise."
And just like that, all the pain and frustration seem to melt away, replaced with the warmth of his arms around you. You know things won't always be easy with Niou, but right now, in this moment, it feels perfect.
