"Empty Spaces"

The phone line between us

is long and thin and crosses

mountains

and I can imagine the shape

and position

of your body –

sitting, your head held in the curve

of the thumb and forefinger

of your left hand...

or maybe on your side,

in bed,

staring at the wall and trying to imagine

I'm behind you.

I reach out and place my hand

upon your hip.
