Behind the Scenes: Would You Rather

I had a lot of fun writing this story, mostly because it was based on an actual game of Would You Rather I played with my siblings when we were kids.

To be silly, we usually played with exaggerated pompousness, theatricality, and seriousness, just like the kids in the story, and on the day in question, our mother happened to pass by just as I was asking, "would you rather grow hair on your teeth or teeth on your hair?"

Her reaction was a lot less stuffy than the mother in the story, and we were a lot less rude and flippant than the kids, but I made those changes to drive the story towards that sudden ending. I also tried perfecting Nadia's hairy pronunciation by writing how I sounded with strips of paper in my mouth.

It's not a super fresh idea, but I thought it'd be amusing to have the "would you rathers" unintentionally come true, and I included an asking stick which was a cane that belonged to their late grandmother.

For the backstory, which I later removed to keep the mystery, I added extra lore for the grandmother, claiming she had an obsession with trapping entities in inanimate objects and that she died in a house fire and the only items to survive were the bamboo cane, a brass lantern, and a small Persian rug, which were divided to her three children.

If you've read the story, let me know what you think. I’m always open to feedback, suggestions, and critique!
