Chapter 37a – Anna POV

I knew I was pregnant, I could feel it but I wasn't going to actually go outside, not when I was sure Logan and his pack would be searching for me but I wouldn't let them catch me. I wouldn't leave the cabin for something as small as a pregnancy test. When I finally let them catch me, I'd be going back to Chris with our beloved child.

Unlike Rainella, our child - Chris and mine - was made in love.

Chris POV

Two days. That’s how long it’s been since we’ve seen Kayla in human form. Not because she refused to shift back but because she’s been asleep. Switching off with Rainy, my mom and Lucy, none of us wanting Kayla to wake alone.

When Logan finally came back six hours later, he did so with an air of coldness in his trail. A mask and wall, his wrath waiting to be unleashed. We sat down with Juliet, Shavon and Masen joining, looking slightly green. He had good reason too, Logan had been the one to tell me to turn her head to the side, but he showed us footage of why and that had my blood boiling. It was horrific and heinous, even then I wasn’t sure those words captured what we saw.

Right now Logan, Shavon and I were in the room, they met me in here, just watching her sleep. It was silent, no not silent, but I felt that Kayla was in a bubble or peace now, she hadn’t been restless, or doing much rolling around in this wolf form.

After the first day, we had to explain to Rainy that most likely, Kayla suffered a psychotic break. It was years in the making, but being released, being introduced to so many things all at once – not that we could have avoided that, they didn’t see much of anything in that prison basement. Juliet had claimed that her not speaking was just a warning sign of what was too come, but Shavon, she wasn’t so convinced.

The ‘psychotic break’ – her psychosis – had its potential, Kayla – all the children and Rainy – may or may not have mental health disorders, but they had suffered injuries, and extreme sleep deprivation and isolation in various forms. Shavon and I agreed, the day Kayla stopped speaking something triggered that, the change – her shift – is what led to her break. Seeing things – remembering her abuse – while she changed painfully; in her small mind, her shift could’ve been someone beating or mistreating her and it confused her.

“Have you gone over everything?” Shavon asked and I glanced up to see whether or not she was speaking to Logan or I, it was for me.

“Yeah I went over everything from that day…” I said disappointed and frustrated, I couldn’t pinpoint just what would cause this, “that day the only people who were nearby are nurses, Caleb, Grace, Nico and Lucy,” Logan finished.

“And all your checks came back negative? None of them are in anyway involved?” She asked Logan this time.

He growled, “I wouldn’t let anyone near them to hurt them, nor would I employ someone even remotely tied to this sick shit!” he gritted his teeth, fists clenched at his sides.
