Bondita's p.o.v

My bare foot touched the soil – the soil I've dreamt of standing on for the past four years, the soil on which I started my life, the soil holding the country which I called my home... Giving out a relieved sigh, I inhaled in a large amount of air. Pure bliss! That's what I'm feeling right now – the scent of Mother Nature touching my soul. I bent down and took a lump of soil from the ground. Pressing it against my forehead, I prayed to Dugga Maa.

"Dugga Maa... Aj se meri zindagi ka ek naya adhaay shuru ho raha hai. Jeise hi apne har baar mera sahara aur himmat bani hai, weise hi mere sath dete rehna. Aur mere... hamare sapnon ko poora karne mein madat karna. Agar hamse koyi galti ho jaye toh maaf karke use sudharne ka ek mauka de dena... Hamesha hamein sahi raah dikhana Maa"

I let the lump of sand fall to the ground and decided to inspect my surroundings. Nothing has changed much. Everything seems more or less the same. The same people with same dresses, same chattering, same excitement and same vigour. It's indeed a relief to get back home.

"Bondita!!!"

A squeal was all I could hear before I realize I've been tortured by a bone breaking hug. With a chuckle and a small element of astonishment, I realize who it was.

"Laya!" I broke the hug and forced her away to a hand's distance – inspecting her from head to toe.

"Culcutta ne bohot acha badlaav laya hai ap par, Doctor babu" I joked.

She looked more vibrant and happy than the last time I saw her – totally the friend I was obsessed with.

"London ne bhi toh acha jadu kiya hai ap par, Barrister babu" She raised an eyebrow.

"Ab Doctor babu aur Barrister babu iss bechara Zamindar babu ko dekhogi bhi nahi?" I heard Batuk behind me and a wide smile touched my lips when I turned to face him.

Inspecting him from head to toe, I crossed my arms and ran a finger through my chin.

"Weise Culcutta ka jadoo toh ap se bhi baras raha hai Chote Zamindar Sahab. Kaafi badal gaya hai ap" I pointed out.

"Mein hoon hi itna sundar aur manmohak! Par uska shrey tum Culcutta ko mat dena" he boasted.

"Sahi kaka. Uska shrey baba ke udaay huyi paison ko dena, jo tum mujhse churate the" Som dada said from beside him.

"Arre dada"

"Haan Barrister Bondita, dada hi hoon. Ab jab ap itni badi barrister ban gayi hai toh ham aam insaanon se baat karna mein pareshani hogi na? Isiliye meine socha mein khud hi aakar baat karoonga apse" he winked.

"Kya dada ap bhi! Jante nahi hai kya? Bondita chahe aasman chu rahi ho ya zameen, ahankar nahi karte... Aur karna bhi nahi chahiye, aise-"

"Tumhare Pati babu kehte hai" Batuk completed.

"Nahi! Maa kehti hai" I responded frowning.

"Arre aayi nahi ki shuru hagaye tum sab. Saari ladayi yahan khade rahkar karogi kya? Chalo! Ghar chalte hai" Laya dismissed us off and dragged me to the car.

"Weise... Sirf ap teenon hi hai?" I enquired while walking.

"Haan Boudi, woh... Dada ko achanak kisi kaam se Culcutta jaana pada..." Som dada replied.

"Matlab... Woh ghar mein bhi nahi hai?" I blurted out in panic.

"Nahi... Arre shuru mat hona aa jayenge do din baad" Batuk rolled his eyes.
