NOT EVEN MRS. FIELDS

"Iris, could you please do your laundry for once," her mother yelled from the laundry room. She'd been too caught up talking to Perri about college that she hadn't really been doing her recent chores. "Yeah, I'll do it in a bit!" she called back to her as she unmuted the FaceTime call. "So back to what I was saying, if I get into UCLA or even Stanford-"

"Iris, Conrad is here!" Indiana called out. Iris sighed, knowing she wouldn't be able to finish her conversation with Perri since Conrad arrived. "Ooo Conrad," Perri sang through the call. She rolled her eyes, ending the call and texting her that they'd call later, and of course, Perri being Perri, replied with a winky face emoji; gross.

She saw the brunette boy even before she made it all the way down the stairs, seeing him talk to her dad at the kitchen island. "So Conrad, any thoughts about college yet?" Conrad shrugged, "Thinking about Brown, or a school nearby here." Her dad smiled, catching her from the stairs, "Well Iris plans to stay here, isn't that right sweetie?" For a brief moment, she frowned at her father's statement, but held her facial features high, "Yeah that's right, might apply to Suffolk."

Conrad didn't say much, just nodded, they never really talked about college or anything like that since it felt too far away, two years may be close, but it's seven hundred and thirty days, that felt long away.

"I'll leave you kids to do whatever teens do, just nothing I wouldn't do," he pointed at Conrad, giving him the 'I'm watching you' look. Conrad laughed it off, pulling out his cell phone to show her something. "I was thinking," he started. "I don't like where this is going," she replied back. He smiled, that smile that could make her day no matter the circumstance. "What if we get like a job together? I mean wouldn't that be sick, working with your best friend at like McDonald's or something?"

"I am not working at a fast food chain, if anything I wanna work at that record shop in the mall, the one that's connected to a bookstore." Conrad gave her a frown, "Not even like Subway?" She rolled her eyes, he'll never budge, "Not even Mrs. Fields."

"Hey Con!" she called, running up the stairs of his house, "The new Marvel movie came out do you wanna-" Iris open the door to see him with Aubrey, the two watching a movie on his bed. "I'm sorry, I didn't call or text you that I was coming, I'll see you later," she shyed away, closing the door to give them privacy.

The embarrassment on her face wouldn't go away, it was too obvious that even Mrs. Fisher could tell. "I'm sorry sweetheart, I really was going to tell you he had company but you were rushing, I couldn't stop you." The bright woman smiled at her, and she couldn't help but smile back, "No worries Mrs. Fisher, I didn't even think about texting Con either, I'll just go back home."

"Happy Birthday Jere!" Indiana smiled, throwing cake at Jeremiah. "You're so annoying Indi," Jeremiah groaned, throwing cake back at the girl, laughing so hard he started to cough. Conrad and Iris watched as the event happened, and sooner enough Conrad had joined, throwing cake at the older Romero, the whole celebration turning into a cake fight.

"The one time I put makeup on," she glared at Conrad, "You look better without it anyways, I'm doing you a favor Iris." She couldn't help but laugh, his lightheartedness could never be taken seriously. "Alright guys, get cleaned up, Jeremiah has to open his presents from Belly and Steven," Mrs. Fisher smiled, holding up a wrapped box with a multitude of stamps.

She didn't really know Belly and Steven, but she knew that they were close since she was told that their mother was best friends with Mrs. Fisher. Conrad too spoke highly of Mr. Conklin, their father, which was really interesting to Iris since he never talked much about his dad like that.

Whenever he'd come back from Cousins, he would always be sunburnt, and would always say 'I forgot to put on sunscreen and was always lazy to put it on.' The same conversation would happen every summer, and at the end of the day the older Fisher would explain his 'best summer ever'. The way he talked about Cousins really made Iris want to go there, she's always wanted to visit the beach on the East, but had only ever been to California's beaches and Florida's once.

One day, one day I'll visit, she said to herself.
