That night, after Sophie and Fred had gone to sleep, I got Joe's book out again. I noticed the black rabbit was still missing. There were a couple of lights on in the windows of the house now though. I leaned in until my nose was almost touching the cover.

There was a face in one of the windows.

It was too far away to make out, and it was just a silhouette with the light behind it, but still, I felt like the person was watching me. I quickly opened the book and lay it flat down on its spine, my heart thudding.

Last time I'd folded the corner of the page over, wondering if it would be there the next time I opened the book. It was, but it didn't make any difference, because the old chapter had been replaced by a new one.
