She explained everything afterwards. How she'd been planning it for a while now. How she'd read an article in one of her magazines about Teenage Promiscuity (Sophie loves big words like this), and had concluded that it was unnatural for us to be living together without Consummating Our Relationship (she didn't rattle on about being married anymore). She made it all sound like an obligation, basically. A chore she had to do.

She'd spent the whole afternoon buying clothes and getting her hair cut and coloured and her nails and makeup done. Finally, she'd stopped at a pharmacy to buy condoms – she had a heap of science to back herself up on that too, and as usual was dying to educate me about it.

"Are you going to do that every day?" I said, meaning the makeup and everything.

"Don't be ridiculous."

"Seriously though, awesome birthday present Soph."

"Glad you liked it."

"Let's do it again."

We did.
