The bell rang, and in the hallway, between classes, she texted Chris. "Let's sit outside today," she said.

"What about Victoria," He replied.

"Idc," Penelope texted. "I need to talk to you. Alone."

"K," Chris replied.

The class between the two felt long and full of suspense. Penelope felt every odd thing stack up in her mind.

Victoria refused to talk about why she left. She was strangely cold. Seemed to avoid sunlight. Was stronger than she expected. She made a beeline to a spot of blood. And she appeared covered in blood, and her eyes seemed red in the light.

Penelope's mind wandered to the episode of Murders and Me that she had watched a bit ago. Vampires. But vampires didn't exist, vampires were a superstitious designation that was used for those with rabies back before they had science.

But all of the evidence was so compelling. Penelope thought like she was going mad, like she was Alice in Wonderland.

Penelope was called on for a question in class, but struggled to answer it because she was so fixated on Victoria. Her perfect red lips, stained with blood. Her graceful Roman nose, twitching as it scented blood on the twilight breeze?

By the time it was lunch, her hands had a slight tremble that refused to leave. She could still feel the eyes of people looking at her with pity But no, ht pity felt more like a great. Woul it be her who they mourned next?

She grabbed lunch from the lunchroom, and then made her way out into the courtyard and into the sunken amphitheater. Chris was sitting on stage, alone, with his lunch.

Penelope sat down next to him and crossed her legs. Chris looked up from his phone.

"Penelope," he said. "You don't look so good. Do you need to go home?"

Penelope shook her head. "No," she said.

"What happened?"

"Surprisingly, nothing relating to.. her..." Penelope said.

"Then what did happen?"

Penelope looked around, and saw that everyone was at least thirty feet away. Nevertheless, she still spoke in a soft, low voice. "During religion, Victoria left class. She didn't return, so Mr Baker sent me to go and find her."

She bit on her lip for a second, wondering how to phrase it, and then continued. "I went to the bathroom. There was a trail of blood going from her bag to the stall. She didn't want to let me in, so I threatened to pick the door, and she let me in."

"Chris, her mouth was covered in blood. There was a pool of blood on the floor. It was too dark to be recent. It must have been someone else's blood - she even confirmed it for me!" Penelope exclaimed.

"What the hell," Chris said.

"That's what I said! I demanded an explanation, but she said she couldn't tell me there. She said she'll tell me later," Penelope said.

"Where?"

"At my house."

"She knows where you live?"

"Yes, we were best friends for years," Penelope said.

Chris paused and breathed in. "I don't like this. I really don't. I think you should try and get her to meet you somewhere else, somewhere in public. That way, if she does anything bad, others will be around."

"My parents will be home."

"But if she shows up with a knife or a gun or something, that won't matter," Chris said.
