The moon hung low in the sky, casting its silvery glow over the worn cobblestones that lined the streets of my small town. As I made my way home from another long day at work, the familiar ache of weariness settled into my bones, weighing me down like an anchor. I walk with my head down occasionally glancing at my surroundings back and forth, my steps slow and measured, as if every movement required a colossal amount of effort. The weight of the day pressed upon me.

Work had been relentless, the demands of my job pressing in from all sides like a suffocating embrace. Meetings, deadlines, endless emails–I had waded through them all, each task feeling heavier and heavier with each passing moment that I was there, threatening to crush me beneath its unyielding weight. But, it was nothing compared to the heaviness that lurked within my own heart.

But it wasn't just the stress of work that weighed on my mind—it was also the ever-present strain of my relationship with Liam, my boyfriend of three years. Our love had once been a beacon of light in the darkness of my life, a source of comfort and joy amidst the chaos of my world. But lately, it felt like we were drifting further and further apart, like two ships lost at sea, struggling to find their way back to each other.

Liam was a good man, kind-hearted and loving but there were cracks in our foundation that no amount of love could mend. We argued more often than not, our words laced with frustration and resentment, unable to bridge the growing divide between us.

As I reached the doorstep of my small apartment, I felt a knot form in the pit of my stomach–a knot born of the uncertainty and unease that had become the main thing about our relationship. I hesitated for a moment before entering.

Inside, the apartment was engulfed in a soft glow of lamplight, casting long shadows against the walls like ghosts from the past. Liam was sitting on the couch, his expression unreadable as stared up at the ceiling, lost in his own thoughts.

As I approached, Liam's gaze met mine, and I could see the solemn look in his pretty brown eyes. His eyes once filled with warmth and affection, now held a glimmer of sadness.

"Elara." he began, his voice soft and strained, "we need to talk."

My heart clenched at his words. I mean, I knew at some point this would happen but I didn't think it would've been today.

A cold knot of dread formed in the pit of her stomach. She nodded silently, bracing herself for the conversation that was about to unfold before her.

Liam took a long deep breath, his fingers fidgeting nervously in his lap as he searched for the right words to come out of his mouth. "I... I think we need to take a break. And not a break like we usually do, but a real break. Apart from each other. For good." he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.

The words hung in the air like a heavy fog, enveloping both of them in a suffocating silence. Elara felt as though the ground had been ripped out from beneath her feet, leaving her adrift in a sea of uncertainty. She knew this would happen, but she still couldn't help but feel utterly hopeless in the moment.

"I'm sorry, Elara," Liam continued, his voice thick with emotions. "I just...I don't know if I can do this anymore. It's not fair to either of us to keep pretending like everything is okay when it's really not."

Tears welled up in Elara's eyes, blurring her vision as she struggled to make sense of the words echoing in her ears. This couldn't be happening–not now, not after everything they've been through together.

"But Liam," she choked out, her voice trembling with emotion, "we can work through this. We can fix whatever's broken, together...right?"

Liam shook his head, face filled with a mixture of sadness and regret. "I wish it were that simple, Elara," he said softly. "But sometimes, love just isn't enough."

With those words, the last remnants of hope crumbled within Elara's heart, leaving behind nothing but a hollow ache. She felt as though a part of her had been torn away, leaving her raw and exposed in the wake of Liam's decision.

As Liam stood and moved towards the door, Elara watched him go, her heart heavy with so much weight of their shattered love. And as the door clicked shut behind him, she was left alone in the silence of the empty apartment, grappling with the harsh reality of a love lost.

In that instant, Elara's emotions, even more heightened, broke down in a loud sob. The good memories they had washed over her. Elara couldn't help but think of all of the good times they had each other and all of the laughter they shared with each other.

Well, when things were good. Although she thought of the good times, the bad times definitely overshadowed them. Because after every good time, was followed by arguing, insecurities or jealousy.

"Let me be your life raft, Elara," Sable, my best friend of five years, says to me firmly. "Let's have a girls' night out, just you and me. You've been cooped up in this apartment for far too long, letting Liam dictate your life. It's time to reclaim your freedom and your happiness."

Elara hesitates for a moment, the weight of her sorrow still heavy upon her shoulders. But then, with a deep breath, she makes a decision–to step out of the shadows of her pain and into the light of possibility.

"I know, but when you're in a relationship, going out is just not as fun..."

There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line. Elara could tell that her best friend was giving her the biggest side eye right now. Elara stifled a little giggle thinking about Sable giving her a side eye with her silly little face.

"What's funny?"

"Just thinking about your stank eye you'd be giving me right now," Elara says with a light smile. "You're right, Sable. Let's do it, let's have a girls' night out."

And with that simple decision, Elara felt a glimmer of hope begin to flicker within her heart–a reminder that even in the darkest of times, she still had her best friend, Sable.
