Nine - The Ballerina Box
The next morning I woke up stiff from falling asleep in a curled up ball.
I let out a grunt as I stretch my limbs, receiving tons of cracks and pops from my tensed bones.
I let out a sigh as I looked at the clock on my desk.
12:15
It read. I throw back my covers and stand up.
Knowing that I needed to get up and start the day.
I walk over to my dresser and look into the mirror that sits above it.
I look like a mess.
My cheeks are red and blotchy and my hairs a rats nest.

As I look away, to pick up the things I'll need.
I noticed that mom had placed the jewelry box on my dresser.
I hadn't seen this thing in years.
I picked it up to hold it in my hands as the memory began to surface.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETY!" Mom and Dad say at the same time, as soon as they entered my room carrying with them a cupcake with a candle sticking out the top.
The candle ablaze.
"Make a wish." Mom says, holding the cupcake out to me.
I close my eyes and thought real hard.
And then let the air release from my lungs and distinguish the flame.
A smile creeps onto my lips.
"Can't believe my little girl is gonna be in the double digits." Dad croaks.
Why do they always have to be so sentimental and cheesy.
"Daaaadd." I whine.
"What!?!" He exclaims.
"You're doing it again" i say, giving my eyes a roll.
"Okay okay, sorry." He says throwing his arms in the air in defense.
"I'll go put the cupcake with you're breakfast and you can have it before school." Mom says turning and leaving.
"Here sweetheart." Dad says holding out a wrapped box.
I untie the ribbon and lift the top.
Inside was a little jewelry box. I pull it out and unclip the latch and open it.
The inside was covered in a pink velvet and there was a mirror on the lid and a ballerina.
"It doesn't work at the moment but I'll fix it in time." Dad says giving me one of his most sincere smiles.
"Thanks Dad." I say wrapping my arms around him and giving him a squeeze.

A tear slips down my cheek as I am brought out of my memory.

He never did get the chance to fix it.

I let out a chirp as I am brought out of my thoughts by a knock at my door. I put the box down and wipe my eyes and cheeks with the backs of my hands.
"Y-yes?" My voice croaks.
"Just me, was wondering if you were awake yet, I've made some lunch if you want any." Mom says.
"I'll be down in a few." I say after clearing my throat.

After a short lunch of ham and cheese sandwiches and potato chips. I return to my room and flop myself down on my bed.
My mind begins to buzz with the thoughts of dad.
Gosh I miss him so much.
My heart clenches at that last thought and I have to bite my lips to hold back tears.
I let out a deep frustrated sigh and run my fingers through my hair.

I push the thoughts of Dad to the farthest part of my mind. Shoving it in a box and sealing it with the strongest tape. And then wrapping it in a chain and padlocking it.
After doing just that my mind drifts to Joe and wondering just what it is he could be doing right at this moment. And if he is thinking about me just as much as I am him.
Gosh this is so pathetic, I'm so pathetic.
I let out a few curse words under my breathe. And that's when I hear my phone beep.
I grab it from off the night stand and read the screen.

My heart falls to my stomach and my throat tightens.
I had completely forgotten that I had given my number to Joe.

I read the message over and over again, letting it sink in.
I just couldn't believe what it said.

"There's a carnival in town and I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go with me?" -Joe :)
With a smile on my face I typed a reply.

Ohhh what's she gonna say??

So sorry that this is late. I've been extremely busy the past week and haven't had the chance to write.
With school and the fair.
It sucks having to take three online classes in order to graduate.😩

And I'm saying this ahead of time the next chapter might be just as late. This week is homecoming and so ill be busy and won't be able to write as much.

But I hope you enjoy this sorta short chapter.
