Chapter 1~ A Performance in a Café

**Sadie’s POV**

“If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied, illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs. If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks then I'll follow you into the dark, then I'll follow you into the dark.” I sang softly while strumming on my acoustic guitar. I smiled when I got the small but meaningful applause and basked in the pureness of the moment. I hopped off the stage in the café that I know all too well from years of playing at and went into the back where my makeshift break room was.

I set my guitar down and tied my long brown hair up with a clip. As I made my way back towards the main part of the café I was stopped by Ted, the café manager.

“Great performance tonight! So here is your paycheck for the week.” He said while handing me a slip of thin paper. I thanked him and went to turn around but his hand caught my arm. “We really do appreciate you singing here, Sadie, its brought in a lot more customers.” I smiled at him. “I like singing here, it’s homey and I don’t get booed off the stage.” I joked lamely. He chuckled and walked back into his office.

After I ordered a glass of water and a small chicken salad I sat down at a small table in the corner by the window. While I waited for my food I pulled out my iPod and played the songs for tomorrow’s set. Halfway through Carolyn by Black Veil Brides a young girl, maybe six or seven, came up to me. I saw her mother watching sheepishly from across the room, waiting to see what I would do. I smiled at her as if to say ‘It’s no problem, she’s adorable!’

I turned to the little girl and asked for her name. “Rosanna.” While she said in her perky little kid voice I noticed her front four teeth were missing. I couldn’t help but giggle at how cute she is, and to top the cuteness off she had pigtails in her hair.

“Hi Rosanna, I'm Sadie.” I said in my talking-to-a-little-kid-voice. “I know who you are silly! I watch you sing all the time, Momma takes me here aftah school every day and I get cookies and hot chocolate. We eat while we listen to you sing songs with your pretty voice; I think the best thing about your songs is the gee-tar. My favorite song is Yellow Submarine by the Beatles, my favorite color is yellow what’s yours?” she babbled.

“Purple, hey Rosanna I’ll be right back ok, freeze!” she giggled then froze so she looked like a robot.

I jogged up to the counter and ordered a chocolate chip cookie and a mug of hot chocolate. With my treats I walked over to Rosie’s mother and she greeted me sheepishly. “Hello I'm Pam, Rosanna’s mother. I'm sorry if Rosie has been a burden, she just adores you so much.” “No, no, she was very entertaining and adorable.” Pam laughs at this. “I actually would like to do something special for her, that is if that’s ok with you.” I asked.  “That’s fine, I'm sure she would be thrilled!” I smiled and set down the treats where Rosie would be sitting and went back to my table.

When I reached my table I found Rosanna in the same robot position I left her in.

“And unfreeze!” she let out a huge puff of air while she slumped back into the seat. “Come on I have to show you something.” I said while holding my hand out for her to take. I led Rosie to my break room and held out my guitar to her.

“Rosanna meet Rachael, Rachael, Rosanna.” Rosanna squealed with delight and started to pluck the strings on my guitar.

After a few minutes she declared she was hungry. Perfect.

I led her down the hallway to her mother’s table and she squealed again when she saw the cookie and hot chocolate waiting for her.

I slipped onto the stage and tapped the microphone. “Uhm excuse me, I know that this wasn’t scheduled,” this got everyone’s, including Ted’s attention. “But I’d like to sing a song for a special little girl named Rosanna.”

And with that said I started playing to the tune of Yellow Submarine while Rosanna grinned wildly and danced with her mother. After the first verse I had everyone singing and half the café on their feet dancing.

I couldn’t help but smile sadly to myself… she would have loved to see this.
