“There is a God,” Cynthia declared dramatically as we burst through the school’s main entrance door. I grinned and nodded in response as we practically skipped down the stairs, leading us further away from school. Finals were finally over. As much as I liked learning and studying, there was always the excitement that enveloped the atmosphere whenever summer came around. All over the school’s front yard, people were flocking and buzzing, probably talking about their summer plans. I was about to ask Cynthia what her plans were for the summer, when a voice called my name from behind us.

Whirling around, my eyes rested upon Tyler who was maneuvering his way around a throng of people trying to reach freedom as well. I smiled up at him when he finally reached us, and he slung an arm around my shoulder. He nodded and smiled at Cynthia, which she returned. Tyler then turned to me again and the mischievous glint in his eyes told me that he was about to do something embarrassing. Before I could even move away, he cupped his free hand around his mouth and yelled, “Summer!”

I swear, my right eardrum burst.

There was an enthusiastic roar in response to his war yell though, making Tyler smile proudly down at me. Of course I just rolled my eyes, while Cynthia burst out laughing. He was feeling elated lately, since Maya actually said yes to his question of whether she’d be his girlfriend. It took her some time to answer, which I totally understood, but in the end she said yes. Tyler delivered the news to me by calling at 2am on a finals night and shouting “She said yes!” at the top of his lungs. I almost murdered him the next day. But yes, I was very happy for him. I might’ve gloated a little as well, after all I did say everything will be fine.

The new lovebirds would be spending their summer at some archery thingy. I didn’t even know there was a summer camp or something of that sort dedicated for archery. Cynthia would be going on a road trip with her cheerleader friends. She had asked me to tag along, but I told her I already had plans. Secretly I couldn’t really imagine hanging out with cheerleaders most of my summer days. There was an entirely different plan cooked up for my summer. The only people who knew about my plans were my mom and Matty. I had been doing it every summer since freshman year though, and I couldn’t really think of any better way to spend my days away from school.

“Well darlings, I’m off to see my girl,” Tyler announced, a big, goofy smile appearing on his face. Cynthia rolled her eyes at the mention of darlings, and I chuckled. We said our goodbyes to Mr. Love Struck, and proceeded to make our way to our cars. Cynthia turned to me, a finger twirling at a curl in her hair, her eyes all sparkly. Amused, I raised my eyebrows at her. She smiled in response.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come on the road trip with us?” She asked. She dug around her bag and fished out her keys, and then returned to look at me, a hopeful expression on her face.

I smiled softly and shook my head as I respond. “Sorry Cynthia, I wish I could, but I already have plans and I can’t really depart from them.”

Cynthia pouted, but it was gone as quickly as it came. She nodded and managed a small smile. “Okay, but it would be more fun with you!”

I laughed as I adjusted the strap of my bag on my shoulder. “I’m sure you girls will turn up every state you come to into a partying one! No need for my help.”

Cynthia laughed too, and winked as she got into her car. She rolled down the window and peered out of it. “We had to get together before we go our separate ways for the summer,” she said again, quite theatrically. She must’ve seen me rolled my eyes since she stuck her tongue out at me before laughing again. Revving the engine, Cynthia began to pull out of the parking lot. Before speeding off, she shouted at me, “I’ll text you!” With a wave, she was off.
