This creature is an actual human being with the capability of changing his form into an animal of his/her choice at nightfall, the most common animals are jaguar, puma, dogs, owls, crows and coyotes. The Nagualism could be the Hispanic version of the Native American skinwalker, this chamanistic practice is very old yet people still performs it nowadays, these transformations are slightly different from the common animals, for example; there are a lot of sightings of weird looking dogs, big as a wolfs but with hands instead of paws or the body of the animal with human faces; in the Hispanic folklore it is claimed that witches are the ones who usually transform into Naguals, most commonly taking the form of ravens or owls.

Personal Experience

My mother told me once that when she was very young, way before I was born, she used to live in a big house with a courtyard, one night she was sleeping but was awoken by scratches on the door outside the patio at a very late hour, she woke up my grandma and ordered her little brother to stay inside the house, my grandma grabbed a broom in case she needed it to use it to scare away whoever was doing the noises. They went outside, my mom waiting at the entrance of her bedroom as my grandmother headed to open the door; their surprise was great, a black dog as big as a wolf with red glowing eyes came inside the patio passing through the closed door just to stare at them in a threating fashion.

Both of them screamed in fear, my mom urged my grandmato get inside the house but she was paralyzed in fear, standing where she was, holding the broom. My mom, after a short period of time, took action runningtowards my grandma and pulling her by the arm and taking the broom to getinside the house, the Nagual didn't do anything, just ran away when my mom cameback with the broom and yelling at it, they never saw it again but still sendsshivers down their spines whenever they recall the situation.

Nagual
