Have you ever heard that spirits can possess objects as well? There is a hidden gloomy, yet frightening, place between the canals of Xochimico. An island that according to the legend wasn't intended to be a tourist destination the name of this island is The Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas) Legend has it that long ago a poor little girl met her fate in a strange way by drowning. Many visitors claim that the naughty dolls covered in mud and dirt are alive and can move their heads, open their eyes and even whisper to each other, these toys are displayed around the island, hanging in the trees.

It all started when Don Julian Santana Barrera, the caretaker of the island, found the little girl dead; shortly he found as well a solitary doll floating in the canals. As an act of respect or maybe repentance for not being able to save her life, he hung up the girl's doll in a tree then he began to hang more and more dolls in the trees around the complete island, locals say that Don Julian was haunted by the spirit of the girl and since her death he was never the same so he continued collecting old dolls to keep the spirit pleased and so fifty years passed until he was found drowned in the same spot where the girl died.

Locals believe that Don Julian joined the spirits that guards the island and ever since 2001, after the caretaker's death, it became a tourist attraction. Many visitors bring their own dolls to include them in this charmed floating garden every year, and who knows, maybe to bring a little bit of happiness to the poor restless soul of the girl, but something is certain, it would be extremely frightening to see those soulless eyes following you as you walk around the island.
