"Daddy, did you have a brother?"

"Daddy, did you have a brother?"

That was the question that started it all. The beginning of change in what used to be a simple family vacation.

When Christmas was about to roll in, Katy and I would pack up for Violet's beach house in Panama for two reasons: to get the girls out of the house, and to visit my siblings. We started the tradition when the girls were only a year old, which was fine since they weren't old enough to understand the magnitude of the trip. However, the trip this year, only a few months after their fourth birthday, will be different.

All because of that damn question.

"They are too young," I argued with Katy as I threw clothes into our suitcase haphazardly days before our trip. "They don't need to know where I go when I visit Paxton. They definitely don't have to know why, either."

Katy let out a soft sigh as she watched me work from across the room.

"Yes, I understand that. But the girls will have to understand at some point--"

"Not when they are four." I zipped up our suitcase a little too harshly.

"Then when?" she countered. "Because I know that even when they are twice their age now, they will still ask. They have been wanting to know about your brother for a long time. And with how things are now . . ." When she grew quiet I looked up to see her softly run a hand over her plump belly. "They are really going to be curious."
