Chapter Thirty

I squinted as I opened my sensitive eyes, the dull ache at the front of my forehead felt like constant brain freeze. Taking a deep breath in the smell of Jared filled my senses. What?! I sat up quickly with realisation. This isn’t my house. My heart thumped double speed with fear of what had happened. Think Amy think. I rubbed my temples trying to bring back memories. The Halloween party- that’s all I could remember. I was still in my costume which was a good sign I guess. My legs swung round so I was sitting on the side of the bed being very graceful in placing my feet on the floor trying not to make any noise that would attract his attention. I made every movement silent especially when putting my shoes on which were neatly placed at the end of the bed. All that could be heard was the chirping of the birds outside, thick deep red closed curtains blocked almost all the light shining through the window.

How am I going to get out of here without him noticing? In my head I drew a mental plan of the house. How the hell did I get here? Very slowly I tiptoed across the carpeted floor picking up my red cape off the end of the bed on the way to the window. “Jesus.” I cursed as a blinding beam of light shone through the gap in the curtain I had created. After blinking a few times the light became more bearable. My fingers worked at tying the two pieces of red material into a bow securing my cape in place. The large window was very smooth and easy to open; peeping down it looked like quite a fair way down- I definitely wasn’t planning on jumping.

When my feet landed on the patio I breathed out with relief, it wasn’t easy shimmying down the old thick drain pipe there was a few times when I thought I was going to slip and end up being splattered over Jared’s garden. There was a thick layer of white mist of the ground meant it must be early in the morning. The hairs on my arms stuck up with protest of the cold, as I breathed out my breath created a mist of white that evaporated in the atmosphere. I began to jog across his large back garden being motivated by the feeling of getting in my own bed and sleeping for the rest of the day.

“Going somewhere?” his voice startled me.

“Home.” I shouted not turning round just running into the forest.

“Urgh.” I groaned as I fell into my cold bed burying my head in the pillows trying to hide from the world. 5.30am Thursday 1st November 2012 my digital clock informed me. My eyelids felt like they had weights attached to them and I didn’t hesitate in letting them close and slip into a peaceful sleep.

“Haha somebody has a hangover!” a voice mocked as my duvet was being pulled from my grasp.

“Haha somebody is going to end up in hospital,” I warned with a croaky voice. Although my eyes weren’t open I could still see the light as it shone through my eyelids, I squinted as I attempted to open them. Ellie stood gazing down at me “Well this is a first. I’d never thought I’d see the night that perfect Amy got wasted,” she laughed.

“I was not ‘wasted’ I was just…merry,” I hugged my warm duvet to my chest “and how did you get in anyway?”

“You left the door unlocked,” I pictured myself stumbling through the door this morning “come on get up you’re still wearing your costume and it has to be back by the time the shop closes.”

“Oh sh*t!” I cursed jumping out of bed and looking in the oval mirror on my dressing table, my hair looked like a birds nest and my long red cape was wonky hanging over one shoulder with the bow on the other side of my neck. “Can you go make me some breakfast while I get changed?” my stomach felt tense with hunger.

“Seeing as I’m a brilliant friend I will.” Ellie cheerfully hopped out of my room, her footsteps could be heard thumping down the stairs.
