Lir's body tensed and flinched as the colossal figure suddenly loomed over her like the peak of the mountain range Odhrán called his realm. On its head, the fae carried the skull of a stag with black, empty eye sockets. The ice-blue eyes in it stared at her like will-o'-the-wisps in the blackness of an impassable forest.

A black-brown bearskin lay around his shoulders, held in place by copper-colored fibulae and adorned with pearls and pieces of bone like a precious necklace. His muscular, strong body was covered with all kinds of patterns and symbols from ancient times, so old that even the nature spirits could no longer remember their origin. His ebony-brown hair fell like seaweed over his broad shoulders, some strands braided into plaits, others wild and free, as befitted his nature. The prince of the wilderness, the lord of the wild hunt...

"You know I'm more comfortable in the shadows than in the light, a little ray of sunshine," his voice rumbled like the playful growl of a predatory cat.

Inevitably, the smell of death rose to her nose. Not the disgusting decay of plants that surrounded Tiernan but the cold, lonely, and inevitable end that awaited every living thing one day. An icy shiver ran down Lir's spine and scattered like a dozen snowflakes inside her. It was the warning instinct of a creature facing a predator already licking its fangs for her blood.
