Readers love how realistic characters in a story can be. It's like they're right there next to you! What a lot of them don't know is that, even though us writers create them, they feel pretty realistic to us too. But, like, in different ways.
Not only do we strive to write them realistically in our stories, but they also have a mind of their own outside of the story too. Characters kinda run the whole show, which means that these fictional little beings also have the power to ruin all of our plans.
And they do. Frequently.

You can have an entire outline lined up, but the more your character navigates the storyline, the more they tend to... have creative differences with us. Next thing we know, we're correcting half an outline because of a decision they made without our permission.
Some of them grow tired of our antics and peace out altogether, and some trick a secondary character into stealing the spotlight.
And when you finally start getting your revenge on them right around the climax, they have a way of weaseling into our heads and making us feel guilty. The audacity!

But, like, seriously... sometimes it feels purposeful, and it makes you wonder if they are actually creations from your own mind or little microscopic demons sent from Hell to make writing even harder than it actually is.
