My phone rings and I answer it.

"Hi, baby." Tate says, waving.

"Hey, Superstar." I say smiling.

"How's Rhode Island?" Tate asks.

"Pretty boring compared to New York." I say.

"Psst." Max says.

"What?" I ask.

"Let me talk to her." Max says.

"For what?" I ask.

"Give me the phone." Max says.

I sigh and hand Max my phone.

"Hey, Taint." Max says.

"Do you actually think my name is Taint or..." Tate asks.

"It's just a little inside joke between us. You know? Two buddies joking around." Max says.

"I'm not laughing, nothing's funny." Tate says.

"That's the thing, we gotta joke around together. So like, you gotta give me a nickname." He says.

"Okay, I'll call you Mac." She says.

"Don't call me that." He says.

"Too late." She says, laughing.

"Give me something different." He says.

"Maxi... MaxiPad." She says.

He stares at her and she laughs.

"Just call me Mac." He says.

"No, I like Maxi. It's cute." She says.

"It's derogatory." He says.

"Is Taint not?" She asks, giggling.

"Nah, but I need a favor." He says.

"Okay." She says.

"You got hella clout so you need to share some with me." He says.

"Uh, no?" Tate asks.

"Uh, yeah? Black history month ain't over yet, bitch." Max says.

We laugh and he smiles.

"You be on TikTok all the time, so help a brother out and post a vid of you listening to my new song." Max says.

"What's it called?" Tate asks.

"Imma send it to you." Max says.

"Alright." Tate says.

"By the way, you look gorgeous today." Max says.

"Alright, alright." I say.

"Somebody's jealous." Max says handing my phone back.

I roll my eyes and Tate giggles.

"Did you talk to your coach about skipping a few games?" Tate asks.

"She said it's fine." I say.

"So we're still on for Spring Break? I wanna buy your ticket now." Tate says.

"Yeah." I say.

"Alright. Good luck at your game. I'll be watching on TV." She says.

"Now there's extra pressure." I say.

She laughs and I smile.

"I'll call you later." I say.

"Okay, bye." She says.

"Bye." I say.

I hang up and sigh.
