Vampire Summer Camp didn't look at all like I'd imagined, I expected it to be dark and gloomy, considering exactly what happens here. Humans are ripped from their lives to become 'companions' for any and all Vampires.

Instead, I was looking at a brightly colored set of decently built buildings in the middle of a fucking wildflower field.

Wildflowers. Are you joking?

Georgia, Brennan, and I were monitored closely, despite the fact we already knew that attempting to run would be futile. Vampires are inhumanly strong, fast, and have senses that can sniff out a human from states away, let alone a scared, clumsy one attempting to escape.

Adrenaline was truly a killer. Heart pumping, sweating, Vampire bait. Adrenaline might make you feel something, but it also means alerting every Vampire within a one-hundred mile radius to your exact location.

Realistically, my chances of escape dwindled to 0%. I can't force Harley to choose me, but I have about a month and a half to make her want to choose me.

I refuse to think of any other Vampire taking an interest in me. It wasn't in my survival plan, so it wasn't thought about.

Intake proved to be supremely mundane. Despite being living, undead myths with supernatural powers, paperwork was the same for a Vampire as it was for a human. It was almost comical how the lower level Vampires were tasked with intake information. Like a shitty prison TV show, they looked bored out of their minds, ready for the proverbial five PM so they could clock out and go home to whatever life lay beyond the wildflower field.

Name? Iris French.
Height? 5'0".
Weight? 168 lbs.
Allergies? Cats and cottonwood trees.
Family history of disease? Not that I know of.
Smoker? No.
Alcohol drinker? Not until recently, for valid reason.

The paperwork admittedly took my mind off of what I knew I was heading into, even as brief as it ended up being. I bit the inside of my lip, a nervous habit I picked up in middle school.

I tasted blood a few minutes later, and immediately panicked. It was way too early to become a snack for the Vampires roaming around me.

I was on edge as I handed my packet of paperwork to one of the Vampires sitting at the intake desk, keeping my mouth glued shut.

"Thank you, Iris. You will be escorted to your lodging momentarily." The same Vampire spoke, eyes cast toward the lip I had bitten.

Fuck.

There definitely has to be a rule against sampling product, right? I'm safe from becoming a snack, I have to be. Higher up Vampires get first pick.

I sat back in my chair after giving the Vampire a quick nod, my leg bouncing as adrenaline, fear, and uncertainty flowed through my very much alive veins.

Georgia, who was sat next to me, placed her hand on my knee, giving me a concerned look. "You have to calm your heart rate, Iris. You can't give them any sort of indication of your fear yet."

"I know." I said on a whisper, not offering anything else to the conversation.

She nodded at me, and turned her paperwork in shortly after. I could hope that Georgia and Brennan were put in the same lodging as me, but it was a long shot due to the amount of humans that occupied the chairs around me.

Happy birthday, I guess.

After a few minutes, another Vampire entered the room through a door next to the desk. She was wearing a uniform indicating she was security, which meant she would absolutely take care of us if we decided to run.
