It had only been 2 weeks since you and Charles broke up but you were already missing him. He had been nothing but perfect to you and it had been an amazing 2 years but at some point, the connection depleted, leaving you two wondering what you were doing. It was for the best, a mutual decision but it didn't stop it from stinging when you thought about it. You were remaining friends, respectful of each other but not as close as before. It was for the best. He didn't do anything to you and you didn't do anything to him, there was no anger or malice towards one another, no tension- just memories and that was nice. You often thought back to moments you had shared with him with a smile. They always made you feel warm inside.
You were clearing out your wardrobe of old clothes today, but soon hit an unexpected bump in the road when you came across one of Charles' hoodies that he had leant you when you were cold at the beach. You remembered it well. Golden hour. He had taken endless photos of you and you had done the same for him and then some of the both of you. You didn't stop smiling and laughing all evening. The beach was perfect: the waves creating calming white noise as you stared at him; the sand soft and warm between your toes; the clouds white and fluffy in the golden and pink sky. The whole night had been spent creating these core memories you would carry with you forever. And you will. Even with Charles as no more than a friend. He really had been good to you and you would be forever grateful for that.
You hadn't noticed but a tear had crept down your cheek as you found yourself staring at the hoodie in your hands. You couldn't help but feel a slight sadness that you wouldn't be able to make those memories with Charles anymore but you had the past to look back on and the future to look forward to so you told yourself you wouldn't dwell on it too much. Every now and then, you would find something that reminded you of your relationship but you chose to take the positive from it- all the amazing things that had happened instead of worrying about the fact you wouldn't have that for a while. You had loved Charles before, it just didn't work out
