Canto 1 ~ Inclide Plane

The figure on the glass was translucent, swaying gently.

The room was dimly lit, with light filtering through the glass window, barely illuminating half of the street. Leveraging the limited light, she witnessed a massive black shadow descend onto the road, crashing onto the roof of a car.

The alarm immediately blared.

"What's that noise?" inquired the voice on the other end of the phone.

"The tree snapped, and a car got smashed," Yin Guo covered her left ear, amidst the loud music, ensuring clarity in hearing her friend's words, "The blizzard is relentless, do you know the temperature now? Minus 20 degrees."

"Who told you to venture out in winter? I warned you," Zheng Yi yawned, still chuckling, "In New York winters, blizzards are commonplace. Consider yourself lucky."

Yin Guo, too fatigued to protest, admitted, "I haven't showered for three days and nights. You must help me find a hotel tonight."

"Hold on, I'm checking."

The call ended abruptly.

Yin Guo, returning to her cousin Meng Xiaotian wearily, said, "Wait a while; Zheng Yi is searching for a hotel. She'll let me know."

Meng Xiaotian, engrossed in his game, nonchalantly remarked, "If it doesn't work out, just stay here and game all night."

Not as adept as Meng Xiaotian, she slumped onto the bar, gazing out the window.

Little did she anticipate encountering the most formidable snowstorm in a decade.

Initially, the flight took off from Capital Airport, facing a ten-hour delay, journeying over the vast sea towards New York. Due to the blizzard, the plane couldn't land, hovering in the sky for over two hours before diverting to Chicago.

That night, Chicago hotels were fully booked, and airlines struggled to arrange accommodation.

The siblings found themselves in the waiting hall, one dozing on a bench and the other on the floor, among a group of stranded passengers awaiting the next day's flight. The following morning, they freshened up in the airport restroom, filled with anticipation. Yet, the wait extended from early morning to darkness before finally being arranged to board the plane bound for New York.

Fortune favored them this time, and they finally landed at their original destination.

As soon as the plane came to a stop, the stewardess informed everyone that there was no parking space in New York, and passengers couldn't disembark. They had to wait for the airport to make arrangements.

A group of people who had spent the night at the airport continued to sleep with their heads covered on the plane.

After a six-hour nap, they were woken up by the radio. With red eyes and drooping heads, they queued to disembark.

Once off the plane, Yin Guo sat on the luggage trolley, waiting for the baggage, and drifted back to sleep. At dusk, the luggage finally arrived on the conveyor belt. She thought she had seen the dawn, but then the hotel called: due to not checking in on time, both rooms were canceled.

At that moment, standing at the entry gate, she nearly cried.

Fortunately, a Chinese girl who had slept at the Chicago airport stopped her after leaving customs. She explained that her family had picked her up, highlighting the difficulty of getting a taxi in such a blizzard. She suggested Yin Guo share a ride to Manhattan, a better option than staying at the airport.
