Canto 5: Snow Fate

Lin Yiyang easily navigated the familiar neighborhood and promptly located the store.

The shop, quite modest in size, featured a palm-sized space. A glass cabinet on the right connected to the checkout counter, while a few small shelves on the left displayed peripheral products. Dozens of hemp rope bags filled with brown coffee beans adorned the shelves, each labeled with handwritten details on white cardboard.

Inside the store, only a young couple occupied the space, engrossed in selecting beans. They softly conversed against the white wall adorned with sack labels, detailing the names, origins, and flavors of the coffee beans. The girl in the couple picked a bean, and placed it in the boy's mouth, inviting him to taste it.

Lin Yiyang selected two beans and offered them to Yin Guo. He gestured toward her mouth, saying, "Try it."

She hesitated, initially declining, but eventually, she obediently placed the coffee bean on her lips, biting and chewing gently. Yin Guo, found it hard to focus on the tasting experience, feeling his watchful eyes.

Sensing Yin Guo's discomfort, Lin Yiyang looked away, reaching for two sweet and sour berries from a burlap bag nearby, and placed them in her palm.

Yin Guo took the berries, holding them in her hand, hesitating to try again this time.

After the departure of the two couples, only three customers remained in the store. Yin Guo and Lin Yiyang stood by the coffee beans, while her cousin browsed the last row of shelves, selecting gifts.

Unaccustomed to sampling beans, Yin Guo pulled out a tissue, spat out the residue, and crumpled it into a ball in her palm. The man beside her noticed and pointed to a small corner on the left side of the counter, signaling her to dispose of it in the trash can. Yin Guo discarded the paper ball.

"What does your friend want?"

Just moments ago, she intended to study how to read the labels, planned to consult a dictionary and was contemplating asking the clerk once she had deciphered them. Lin Yiyang intervened by posing a question.

Yin Guo displayed the names, and he promptly called over a clerk, gesturing toward several bags of coffee beans. The clerk engaged in a friendly conversation, sharing that these were the best-selling items, with Yin Guo attentively listening.

As they headed towards the checkout, Lin Yiyang raised his right arm to check his watch.

Yin Guo promptly remarked, "You seem in a hurry, but it's fine, I've made the purchase."

He had glanced at his watch multiple times since leaving the coffee shop.

Initially, he hurriedly arrived, skipped lunch, devoured the coffee and panini, and brought them along. Though unspoken, the rushed pace was palpable, likely stemming from their journey from Washington.

"Shall we make plans when you're free?" He acknowledged the urgency.

Yin Guo nodded.
