The manner in which the evening’s events unfolded was still a little bit of a blur; it was all rather fascinating:

“Shut up, Kayla!” Ricky snapped.

Kayla glared at him, “Would you like me to start with you? It’s a pipe dream – there is no happily ever after for you both. What do you even know about each other?”

Lexie glared back, “Really? You want to talk about secrecy?”

“What is that supposed to mean? You know nothing about me,” Kayla replied.

“I’m talking about that mysterious package you got in the alley after the library,” Lexie retorted.

“You said you’d stopped,” Trey said with a frown.

“Stopped what?” Ricky asked.

“Your best friend’s been doing drugs,” Lexie said plainly and loudly, causing the people on the surrounding tables to turn.

“What?” Fitch asked.

Kayla turned to him, “You want to judge?”

“You too?” Ricky asked Fitch with wide eyes.

“No, of course not,” Fitch replied.

Kayla scoffed, “Oh so noble, Fitch. Never done a deceitful thing in your life, have you?”

“Kayla,” Fitch muttered with a warning tone.

“What? You don’t want everyone to know how you saved me from myself on that awesome night?” she asked suggestively.

“What is she talking about?” Trey asked warily.

Fitch sighed and shook his head.

“Want me to tell him? Or would you like to do the honors?”

“Stop, Kayla,” Fitch said.

“What is she talking about?” Trey asked with a tight frown.

I knew exactly where this was going.

“Nothing,” Fitch replied.

“Am I that embarrassing?” Kayla asked, looking a little hurt.

Fitch shut his eyes tight for a second and shook his head, unresponsive.

“What is she talking about, Fitch?” Trey asked.

He sighed, “We slept together.” I could feel his gaze fall on me and I shifted in my seat. What did I care? I mean, don’t get me wrong, my feelings for him were ever growing, but I didn’t care much about who he’d been with in the past.

Trey stared blankly at Fitch, and then turned to Kayla, “Was this before or after you and me?” he snapped angrily.

“What is wrong with you?” Rick asked Kayla in disbelief.

“You’re the worst liar of us all, Rick. Not only are you lying to yourself, but then you go on and lie to everyone else,” Kayla retorted. And then they all began the incessant arguing all over again about all the secrets and lies.

Normally, I would have been able to bear such a conversation by zoning out on something else, and that would have been that. But today, I felt like I was reliving the times of Suze and Greg, and all the lies behind the lies, and when all I wanted to do was scream.

I counted slowly in my head, as their voices got louder, drawing even more attention from the surrounding tables.

Please, shut up.
