2005

At one moment I could see, and then the next, water was blinding my vision. "Hey! What was that for?" I ask the pretty seven-year-old girl I had just met.

A grin transforms her whole face. She doesn't reply.

"Riley! That wasn't nice! Let's not splash each other," an unfamiliar voice scolds.

Upon hearing my name, I look up to the beach confused. "But I didn't splash anyone. It was—" I begin weakly when I realize the old lady hadn't spoken to Riley but to the little girl beside me.

"Sorry, mommy!"

I turn to the reason for my soaked hair. "Your name's Riley too?" I pause, realizing something. "Aren't you a girl?"

A melodious laugh comes out of her lips. "Yes, my name is Riley and I am a girl." she chirps. "I'd prove it but I don't think my mother would approve." Then her eyebrows draw together. "Wait. Is that your name too?"

I'm surprised by her 'I'd prove it' statement so my response is short. "It is."

That grin expands on her face and I find myself smiling as well.
