2011
"As terrible as it sounds, I'm really glad Maria isn't here this summer," I speak my thoughts as Riley and I lay on the roof of the abandoned house we used to play pirates in. The last few years have seen less and less pirate playing and more spilling our deepest secrets here. Last summer, we decided to name it.
Riley's Place.
It was Riley's idea, of course.
"You know what? I guess I am too. I missed you this year."
I raise my eyebrows in surprise. "Really?" I'm surprised because Riley seemed to have the time of her life in middle school, without me. She was always telling me stories about how amazing the teachers are and how cool the students are.
Riley turns on her side to look at me. She smiles. "Yeah, I missed you a lot Riley."
