How can you hate the rich colour of you skin
When the sun is what powers it up instead of burning it up?

How can you hate your beautiful dark coils
When they rise towards the sun, which gives the world life?
Have you seen anything more naturally gravity-defying?
Even the birds of the air do not sleep while flying!

When I was a little girl,
I wanted so much to be like a Barbie.
I wanted blonde locks and light skin and blue eyes.
I wanted to fit into a world
That glorified all things light skin and colourful eyes

Dear Chocolate Goddess,
You are unique!
You are a walking solar panel
You don't need those toning or bleaching creams and serums

Your ancestors began civilization
They were kings before time became a concept
They built empires no documentary can ever completely cover

Dear Chocolate Goddess,
You are a manifestation of Divinity
Yes, you!

Stop trying to be who you were never meant to be
Don't whiten that beautiful dark skin; please don't!
Don't perm those coils; wear them like a crown!
Stop denying your traditional name; accept it!

Dear Chocolate Goddess,
Your Melanin is poppin'.
Don't let the world tell you otherwise.
