Because they way they died was very traumatic, neither of them could remember how they died after waking up as ghosts, and only found out by a wee bit of investigation and asking around a bit. However, about a year after coming to the mansion, both started remembering bits and pieces of how they died, and were eventually hit with full-on flashbacks. How they handled them were drastically different.
Sally woke up screaming her lungs out, and was comforted by Slender, who had heard her yells and came to investigate. As such, he knew how she died.
BEN was a little different.
For one, he didn't wake up screaming. He woke up with his hands wrapped around his throat, as if he were drowning all over again, and didn't tell anyone. Not a soul.
