I step into our home for the first time with my newborn girl wrapped in my arms. Her almond shaped eyes look at me as I smile back at her.
Aunt Adhya welcomes the baby into the home and blesses it.
"Sit down dear you must be tired " she tells me
Siddharth finds a spot beside me, and looks at the baby in awe. He has been supirisngly quiet this whole time.
"Can I hold her" he asks
I hand Siddharth the baby, and wonder why he is asking my permission to hold her, after all she is his child
"HI sweety, dad here" he smiles gently pinching her cheeks
Siddharth gets up and walks her slowly around the house.
The baby is nestled up gently in his arms, and for the first time I see pure love in Siddharths eyes. It's a weird feeling seeing him like this. He never looked at anyone this way, not me, not his ex lover Alia, and certainly not that Divaani.
"Here you go" Aunt Aadhya says handing me a cup of tea
"thanks Aunty. One favourite, can you please get me the phone, I want to call mum and dad. They'll be delighted to find out about the birth" I tell Aunt Aadhya
"Sure thing dear be right back sweetheart" she says getting up
Within moments she hands me the phone. Mum would especially be delighted to find out that my baby is a girl. Ever since I told her the news she's been hoping for a girl. Even Esly said she wants a little niece to play with. It's unusual thinking that Esly is going to be an aunt even though she's just ten.
I dial my home number, hoping they pick up. Within seconds I hear my mums voice on the other line.
"Nisha" she calls
"Mum. I have exciting news. My baby has come. She's here" I squel in excitement
Aunt aadhya gives me a silly glance, she's probably never seen me this happy.
"Did I hear you say she?" Mum asks
"Yes. It's a girl ma. I'm so happy. She looks just like Esly when she was a baby. I'm so happy ma" I squel
"This is amazing news Nisha. You've made me a grandmother so early"mum laughs
"Maaa" I sigh
"There there. You ought to send me photos of her. I just can't wait to see my dear granddaughter" mum says with joy
"Definitely" I assure
Amma asks me some details about the time of birth and so on for astrological purposes. She's going to the temple later on today to do a special Pooja for the wellbeing of my baby. Mum must be so excited. If only she could afford to come here and see my dear baby in person.
Siddharth returns back to me
"Who was that" he asks
"Just mum" I reply gently grabbing my baby
"What should we name her?" He asks
"I've actually had two names in mind" I say
"Which are?" He asks
"Naina or Meenaski" I say
"Beautiful names. Naina be nice. N for Nisha, N for naina" aunt adhya buts in
"Humm. Naina sounds a bit short. I feel like everybody has that name don't you think?" Siddharth says
"I guess... what were you thinking then?" I ask
"I dunno. I just want something special for my little daughter. A name that is as beautiful as she is" Siddharth says gazing at her lovingly as she sleeps in my arms
"We have got time to think about a name" Aunt Aadhya says
"You're right. I'll think about the name tonight" Siddharth says
"Sure" I reply
I'm thinking if we drop Naina, we should at least keep Meenakshi as a middle name. That name would be perfect for her, as Meenakshi means 'one with fish shaped eyes' and was a name given to Goddess Parvati. Meenakshi would be perfect for my little one.
"I've got it, I've gotten the same!" Siddharth yells walking back in the living room
"That was quick" I tell him
"Whats the name?" Aunt Adhya asks
"I know I didn't think about the names for long, but this name just jumped in my head and this name is perfect for her" Siddharth says
"Tell us" I ask
"Drishti" he replies
"Drishti what a beautiful name" Aunt Adhya says
Drishti. She was right, it is a beautiful name. A name perfect for our baby.
"Drishti" I whisper looking at her
If I am correct, I think I may have seen her smile a little when I said that name.
"So Drishti. You cool with that Nisha?" Siddharth asks
"Yes it's perfect. Drishti Meenaskshi" I say
"Drishti Meenaskshi. Sounds about right" Siddharth says
