The magnificent kingdom of Kashi, a much-awaited swayamvar was finally commencing. The royal palace gleamed with opulent decorations, adorned with intricate tapestries and fragrant flowers that permeated the air.

The courtyard had been transformed into a spectacular arena, buzzing with anticipation as kings, princes, and nobles from far and wide gathered to participate in this momentous event.

And soon the three resplendent princesses of Kashi-raj - Amba, Ambika and Ambalika,  entered the arena, their beauty was like that of apsaras. They were tall and curvy. Their heads were covered with blue-black hair that was curled. Their nails were stained red and pointedly shaped.

Each step of theirs exuded poise and bashfulness, that captivated all those who laid their eyes upon their noble form

Each step of theirs exuded poise and bashfulness, that captivated all those who laid their eyes upon their noble form.

As they walked to their seats, the eyes of Amba, the eldest princess swayed and fell upon the king of Soubha, Shalva. For a moment, amourous looks passed between them, unspoken words were exchanged, before the princess lowered her gaze.

But an unexpected interruption shattered the calmness of the ceremonious event, catching everyone by surprise.

When the names of all the thousands of kings were being recounted, Bhishm arrived there. He obstructed the path of the princesses, and made them all sit on his chariot by force. Gasps of shock filled the hall, the sisters looked at each other nervously and then back at Bhishm, whose sharp eyes were scanning all the participants.

Addressing the kings, Gangeya said, "Vidwaano ne kaha hai, ki abhushano sahit putriyo ka haath, vivah mei, gunvaan purush ke haath mei dena chahiye. Kuch log putriyo ko dhan milne ke baad dete hai, kuch gaaye milne ke baad dete hai. Kuch kanyaye apni sahmati se vivahit hoti hai, kuch ko bal poorvak le jaya jata hai."

Pausing for a moment, he continued, "Jo dharm jaante hai, woh kehte hai ki kanya ko balpoorvak le jana hi shresht hai. Iss liye, hey Rajao, mai inn kanyayo ko le jaa raha hu, tum sabhi ke netro ke samaksh se. Yadi samarthya hai, toh mujhe rok ke dikhao !"

And saying so Bhishm, mounted on his chariot, swiftly drove off the arena, taking the three maidens with him.

All the kings arose in great anger, slapping their arms and grinding their teeth. They quickly cast off their ornmaments and donned their armour, creating a great uproar.

The radiant ornaments and armour resembled shooting stars. Their brows were contracted and their faces were red with anger. The ornaments and armour dangled, as the brave ones dashed towards their chariots yoked with excellent horses.

Armed with all kinds of weapons, they ascended the chariots and went in pursuit of Bhishm, who was in a solitary chariot.

The kings hurled 10,000 arrows at him at the same time. However, before they could reach, the son of Ganga, sliced all of them off.

Then all the kings surrounded him from all directions and rained arrows down on him, like a mountain being showered with clouds of rain. But he stopped all the showers of arrows with his own and pierced each of the kings with three arrows.

Such was Bhishm's skill in defending himself in battle, as compared to that of other men, that even his enemies applauded him.

Having defeated all of them in battle, left with maidens for the land of the Bharatas. But the king of Soubha, still wasn't ready to let Gangeya go.

The Maharathi King Shalva, whose spirit was indomitable, struck Bhishm from the back.

"Theher ! Maine kaha theher !" Shalva said, driven by anger.

Bhishm was angered at these words. Blazing like a fire that was without smoke, he followed the dharma of Kshatriyas and without any signs of fear, the maharatha turned his chariot towards Shalva.

On seeing him turn, all the other kings wished to witness the duel between Bhishm and Shalva. Like two powerful and raging bulls fighting over a cow in heat, the two turned on each other with great strength.

Amba was concerned, especially after witnessing how Gangeya had defeated other kings. But still she desperately hoped for her beloved Shalva to win, and take her back.

King Shalva, covered Shantanu’s son with hundreds and thousands of swift arrows. On seeing that he had first covered Bhishm, the assembled kings were astounded and exclaimed, "Dhanya ! Dhanya !"

Hearing the shouts of the Kshatriyas, Gangeya, the conqueror of hostile cities, was incensed and cried, "Theher !"

He looked at his charioteer with anger, "Uss Raja ke disha mei rath leke chalo ! Jis prakar garud sarp ka vadh karta hai, mai bhi Shalva ka vadh kar dunga !"

The charioteer obeyed and drove the chariot towards Shalva. Bhishm attached the varuna weapon to his bow and used it to wound the four horses of king of Soubha.

The son of Ganga, used his weapons to fend off all of Shalva’s weapons and used a single arrow to kill his charioteer and with another weapon, he killed the excellent horses.

He summoned one more excellent arrow, and aimed it at Shalva.

"Nahi !" Amba cried, unable to hold it any longer.

Bhishm looked at her, she had a terrified expression on her face, he glanced at the other two princesses, Ambika and Ambalika, they too were looking timid.

The son of Ganga, turned his gaze back at Shalva, and then lowered his aim, and shot the arrow, breaking the chariot of Shalva. For the sake of the maidens, he let him off with his life.

Shalva looked at Bhishm, and then looked at Amba, who was staring at him with teared eyes. The king of Soubha lowered his gaze, and as Gangeya took the maidens away with him, making it clear who has won them.

This form of marriage... Of taking the bride away with force and defeating her kin is called Rakshas vivah (out of the 8 forms of marriage), this is allowed only in kshatriyas... But still it is condemned very much by the shaashtras.

And Bhishm calling it the best form.... Shows you why Pitamah was on the shaiya of teer-💀✨
There are many more reasons that will come ahead.
