Previously:

It was midnight, stars were dimly shining above her head and the full moon illuminated the bloody red garden. It was silent, not even the wind dared rustle leaves on the trees and disturb the atmosphere.

And there, in the middle of a beautiful dark garden, was a girl standing and looking far away into the forest. Tears were rolling down her cheeks, one after another and the smile slowly vanished from her lips, replaced by a sad frown. Who would have thought that the two demon slayers would make their way into her heart in such a short ammount of time...?

Who would have thought that after they left... a part of her would be missing.

Two days have passed since they left and life was harder than ever for (Y/N). Was this the reason why the witches never befriended anyone? Maybe they knew that after those people disappeared from the mountain, there would be a gaping hole left in the place where part of their heart used to be.

She hasn't slept for those last two nights, she couldn't force herself to eat more than an apple a day. It was as if somebody finally gave her everything she has ever dreamed of and then decided to take it all away in just one single second. Why was she feeling like this? She wasn't that sad after Kyojuro left the first time.

Maybe it was the ammount of time she has spent with them. After all, it has been a bit over 5 weeks. She has never been with anyone for that long. She was already missing her late night talks with Shinobu, taking care of the flowers in the garden todether, hell, she even missed just sitting in silence next to Tomioka, wondering what was going through his mind while he stared far off into the distance. They stayed with her for so long and now she couldn't even be sure whether they would ever come back. Some demon could have already killed them for all she knew...

No, she couldn't think like that! They were the elite amongst the demon slayers, there is no way they would go down so easily. And yet she was still worried. Were they eating enough? Did Shinobu's short legs hurt from running after the tall Tomioka all day? And was the man even sad that they had to leave? The whole time they have been here, he has been trying to get back to shape and leave as soon as possible. Maybe he hated her, she didn't know. Somehow that thought hurt more than it should have.

She had to busy herself somehow, she couldn't go on like this. There was no point in worrying about something she couldn't change.

"It's time for training..." she said to herself and got up.

She stripped off her kimono and white nagajuban and got dressed into a black hakama, covering her top half in a wine red nagagi. She found out many years ago that male clothing enabled her to move much more freely so she always trained in it.

"It's been a while." she sighed and got into her first stance.

And suddenly she felt free again. Even tho she was used to maintaining Total concentration breathing at all times without even thinking about it, now that she foucused on it, she could feel the new strenght coursing in her veins.

One step, then a second one, she was gliding through the garden without a single sound, as if she was dancing on air. First form, second form, third... It all felt so right. It was exactly what she needed to calm down. But the world didn't seem to want to leave her alone. She knew so many breath styles and yet... her steely silver blade got engulfed in cold swirls of water.

"Don't think about him."

But she couldn't stop.

"Change it into fire."

But she didn't.

"Why do I see the ocean in your eyes?"

But no answer...
