It's been a while Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are together. Long enough for making Wei Wuxian want to settle down with Lan Wangji. Permanently. And he had a feeling that Lan Wangji felt the same.

That left wwx wondering, , what would be the best way to go about this. He wanted to do this right, he only got one shot afterall. He wanted it to be perfect. He wanted Lan Wangji to know just how much he meant to him. But how to do it?

His first thought was that Lan Wangji was a simple person. While he wasn’t the kind of person to get embarrassed easily in public. Even if he is, he won't show it. So a grand gesture was probably off the table. No friends helping him take part in a flash mob, no airplanes sky writing “will you marry me, Lan Wangji?” Something simple would suffice.

Attempt no. 1

This is when Wei Wuxian found himself in front of their favorite coffee shop, at nine o’clock on a Saturday morning. They were out running errands for Wangji's mom,  they were stopping for coffee on the way. The shop was busy on the inside, and Lan Wangji didn't want Wei Wuxian to get sandwiched between all people, so he had volunteered to brave the crowd while Wwx waited outside.

His heart did a little flip in his chest. Lan Wangji was always so considerate, and he loved him so much. He thought about how now might be the right time, as soon as Lan Wangji came out of the shop. Maybe he would drop their coffees, but it would be worth it.

He fiddled in his jacket pocket for the simple silver band that resides within. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but Wei Wuxian wanted this to be for the proposal only. He wanted to pick out the real rings with Lan Wangji together. Afterall, if he was going to be wearing this ring for the rest of their lives, didn’t he deserve a say in what it looked like?

He watched the shop window for a sign of Lan Wangji, when his phone buzzed. It was only Jiang Cheng. He put it in the back pocket of his jeans and resumed his waiting, fidgeting nervously.

Oh god, he thought. This was really happening, wasn’t it?

Then his phone was buzzing again. Still Jiang Cheng. He quickly shot him back a text.

“I’m busy,” it read.

And then he could see Lan Wangji about to walk out of the little shop, a coffee in each hand and nodding a goodbye to the baristas as he left. Wei Wuxian readied the ring, preparing to get down on one knee.

And then his phone was buzzing for a third time, and a text from Jiang Cheng on his lock screen read, “urgent!!”

He was about to ignore it for a third time, when he couldn’t help but worry that something was wrong . Maybe the house was on fire?

He immediately answered this time, tension clipping his voice.

“Jiang Cheng, you had better be dying,” Wei Wuxian said, only half joking. Jiang Cheng laughed on the other end.

“I said it was urgent, didn’t I?”

“Is everything okay? What happened?” Wei Wuxian asked tersely, putting up a “just a second” finger at Lan Wangji, who raised his eyebrows at him.

“Oh, everything is fine, don't worry. I just thought you might drop by that coffee shop on your way out, and wanted to catch you before you left! Can you pick me up a muffin? I’ll pay you back.”

Wei Wuxian had never hung up on anyone so fast. Really, A-Cheng? Not only had he scared the everloving shit out of him, but he had also ruined his marriage proposal. He threw his head back dramatically as he sighed. Lan Wangji cocked his head.

“Everything okay?” he asked hesitantly. Wei Wuxian exhaled in annoyance.

“Yeah, A-Cheng said it was urgent, but he just wants a fucking muffin. Scared the hell out of me.”

Lan Wangji laughed a little. He started to become loose with Jiang Cheng after his brother announced their relationship. He held out a coffee to Wei Wuxian.

“Well, he should have asked before we left the house.”

Wei Wuxian nodded as he took a sip of his coffee, then blanched at the overly bitter taste. He offered it back to Lan Wangji.

"You gave me yours,” he said, face still screwed up in displeasure. Lan Wangji chuckled as he took it back and looked at the names on the cups.  .

“Oh, I must have mixed the cups.” He gave Wei Wuxian the other cup.Wei Wuxian took a long drink and marveled at the bitter, slightly sweet taste. Lan Wangji always knew exactly how he liked his coffee.

God, he loved this man.
